Image Capture Overview stopped working (Epson Scanner)

Hi,

I have a trusty Epson Perfection 1660 scanner which, up until about a month ago, was working fine with mac 10.8.5 using Image Capture.

I'm getting a "Scanner reported an error. An Error occurred during scanning" message when the scanner attempts to do an overview. I also got an error code 9930 in regards to com.apple.Image_Capture.plist (at least I think it was this number as I can't seem to get this to pop back up - just the 'Scanner reported...' message.

Image Capture still works through the basic interface (when I click 'Hide Details') but I like to tweak resolution and preview the scan before importing it.

It's not a hardware problem with the scanner, as the scanner works on mc PC laptop, and also through VueScan on the Mac.

However, after the demise of TWAIN, I'd just got used to Image Capture and quite liked the fact that I was using vanilla Mac software without having to install anything else to get it working.

I've tried deleting com.apple.Image_Capture.plist/resetting the print system/even changing the USB cable. I've also tried booting from a system backup from a couple for months earlier when the scanner was working which also (confusingly) gives the same error.

Any ideas? Seems really weird that it's suddenly stopped working on the Mac through Image Capture when it works fine on other devices and trough different software.

Thanks in advance

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Had the same problem and this just worked for me:

Hold down option -- > Home

Library -- > Caches

Trash -- > Image Capture files

I'm using a Lexmark printer but was having the same problem.

Lexmark sent a rep who spent the afternoon rebuilding the printer and then sent a new printer. Nothing worked. Called Apple and had a conference call with Lexmark. Nothing worked.

Gave up for while and then tackled it again today. Amazed.

Hi there,

Many thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately there are no Image Capture related files in my user/Library/Caches folder to trash. The only ones I found were in my main Libray/Caches folder, so I backed these up, trashed them, and tried, but no dice. Same error.

Bums. The thing that's confusing me is that it didn't work on my system back up either (when the scanner was working fine with Image Capture. I may go and look to see if I've got a working version of Lion or Snow Leopard that I can boot from to see if Image Capture works from those...

OK. Back from Back-Up Land.

10.6.8's Image Capture Is still working fine with the scanner in Overview mode. No problems.

10.7.6's Image Capture is still working fine with the scanner in Overview mode.

10.8.4's Image Capture, confusingly, isn't (although I'm sure that at the time of this back-up, it was. Interestingly, amongst other updates that popped up when I dipped back into this old OS, one of them was 'EPSON Printer Software Update 2.15.1'. I didn't install it, seeing as it wasn't working anyway, and was when I used that OS last.

10.8.5, my current OS, not working, obviously.

So confused!
