Keyboard shortcut to insert acute accent mark above Russian characters

Does anyone know how to insert the acute accent mark above the Russian alphabet characters? The Shift + Option + "E" key only seems to work for Latin characters, and I cannot find any way to get a proper acute accent inserted above the Russian vowels! (when I try to switch to the English keyboard and inserting it that way, it does simply places the acute symbol in the air and not over the preceeding character!) Even the "Character Viewer" does not seem to have all that would be needed. I seem to remember that in the past OS versions there was a way to accomplish this, but not now....

I would greatly appreciate any help with this!

Yes, it does. Go to the gear wheel at the top left and select Customize, then check the box for Unicode, then in Unicode go to range 00000300 Combining Diacritic Marks and select 0301 Combining Acute. Drag/drop or double click after the base letter to add it to your Cyrillic. Я́

You may need to try different fonts to get the best display.

Thanks for the great answers! I am still working on trying to enable a keystroke combination as you suggested, (for some reason text replacement is not inserting the unicode action of "combine", but rather simply the shape in it's own space again). At least I can use the character viewer to do this, (it is not needed every day, but very frequently. I am a Russian Language student.) If I can get the "text substitution" working properly I will be happy, otherwise I will look into the "ukelele" option. Thanks so much for your good feedback in a timely manner!

Make sure you are typing your substitution after (not before) the letter you want the accent attached to.

When setting up the substitution, enter the Unicode character 0301 in the right box by double-clicking on it in the Character Viewer.
