Q: How do I turn off the "cellular data is turned off for "podcasts"" message?

I keep getting this message or one like it for every app with the cellular data turned off when I am not connected to wifi. Is there a way to make this message go away like the don't show message in the future option windows gives users? I understand it probably helps users that aren't very knowledgable when it comes to using their phone but I do and it is very annoying. It was less annoying a message like it for location services but now I have to tap away the message 10 or more times a day.

OK.  It has been way to long and Apple is not listening.

Let's start a crowd-funding campaign.  It might be the first such campaign to try to get a manufacturer to fix a software bug.  I'm in for a few $$. A few pod casting twitter posts could get more people on board: #adamcarolla #nerdist, etc.

My problem is that I have no time to set it up, but I will certainly support  it.

The campaign result could be something publicly embarrassing to Apple.

    Some examples:

    1. A billboard in San Francisco area with a screen shot of the message that says "Apple, we know it's turned off, we turned it off"

    2. Targeted google words that lead to a link describing apples lack of customer support.

    3. Twitter Ads with similar intent.

    Hi Everyone,

I had this same drama, but here are my thoughts...

Not sure if this will help (and forgive me if this has been covered, I didn't read all 6 pages), but if you go settings>podcasts and turn on Use Cellular Data, but also turn on Only Download on Wi-Fi, would that *fix* the problem?

My understanding is then the cellular would only be used for a small amount of data (like your location, or for an ad), but the large downloads (like new episodes) would only occur when in wi-fi.

Hope this helps someone (or helps someone figure out a better solution).

    Cheers...

A few points to bear in mind -

    • Derrick24 nowhere stated in his OP  that he didn't want to use cellular data
    • People trying to help can only work with what people actually decide to tell them
    • anilsudhakaran reply was perfectly reasonable in that context
    • Everyone helping here is just a fellow user
    • Maybe try losing the attitude if you want help

....and yes...I know I've gone and fallen into the trap of replying to something really ancient but the points are still valid!

    Hey AKRBTN,

Not sure where you are coming from there, or if you just want to start an argument for the fun of it? Anyway, I had this same drama (as stated), and googled the problem and this thread was the top result. After quite a bit of reading it appeared nobody had fixed the problem so I did a bit more digging, found something that worked for me, and posted it here to try and help (or help someone else find a better solution, I believe as stated also).

Anyway, thanks for making someone who is new at this and trying to help feel welcome. It’s people like you that make the internet go round (now THAT’S attitude).

    Cheers.

You need to check who I was replying to?  I have absolutely no issue with you posting any advice you have.  I did realise (only after hitting reply) that I was replying to a message that was posted a long, long time ago.  I am sorry if you were upset.

It's not a bug. It's a feature. Probably put there at the behest of the cellular service providers to goad you into turning cellular downloading back on so that you will accidentally incur overage fees.

Apparently 8.1 fixed this.  The message still does occur randomly about once a day, but that is acceptable.  The real mystery is whether Apple fixed this due to our complaints via Feedback or someone there just saw it was not right and fixed it.  All is well that ends well.

I have 8.1 and it's still extremely annoying to me. I have data turned off for all my social media apps, because I don't want data to be used for those. But now every time I open one (even when connected to wifi) I get the message. It makes sense to alert me once, but I turned the data off for a reason, I don't need to be told it's off every time.

Here is what I just sent Apple Feedback:

Please add an option for cellular data being turned off under the Settings/Cellular to disable any notifications that cellular data is turned off.  The user knows that data is turned off - they did it.  They don't need to be reminded they did it, especially every single time the app is used when not in the presence of a WiFi signal.

How about this?  Instead of an alert every time the app is launched how about when double clicking the Home button to show the apps in the background, that an overlay icon is on the apps that are specifically told not to use cellular data.

Sadly, it has not ended well. Showing it even randomly once a day is not a good ending. Not only that, but it appears to have increased to every time again since the update to 8.1.1. Another example of Apple's impressive arrogance.

I can't believe more people aren't complaining about this. I guess most people have data plans.

I just can't beleive that this problem isn't fixed and more people aren't outraged??? This problem is literally making me switch back to Android. I live in Mexico where data plans are EXPENSIVE. I switched from Samsung to iPhone and my data was used up in days. This was never a problem before. But, I just decided to turn off data for everything except the bare essentials for me. My data usage dropped, thankfully, but now this problem.

Of all the problems listed on this thread, one glaring thing missing is that this is straight up discrimination against the poor, those who can't afford an unlimited plan or live in a place where that is not possible, those who want rightful control over their data use, and those who simply don't want every single freaking application  accessing data whenever they feel like it. Why should I not be able to enjoy this ridiculously expensive phone the same as everyone else simply because I can't afford unlimited data? And the audacity for support to list the "fix" as "oh, turn on your data," is unreal and so far out of touch with real people who can't afford to be connected 24/7. I even have to pay roaming you jerks, so let me decide my data use in peace please!

Annoying doesn't begin to describe this for me. I work 90% of my time in the field with no wifI and a great need to use my phone for a variety of tasks. I need data on for whatsapp to receive free texts (SMS is also expensive here). So my options are deal with this dreadful issue or completely turn data off and loose my only form of comunication. No...that's not annoying, that simply makes this phone useless to me.

I've sent various complaints through official channels. Is there really nothing else we can do?? No one else we can all complain to together collectively?

Whatever....I already know the answer. This isn't the first time a problem has landed on deaf ears. I thought this company was known for listening to it's customers or somethin like that?  F you Apple.

ps...anyone want to buy an iPhone 5? I'm open to trades for any non-Apple phones as well!

Juste spend few days in Turkey, no data used their (not included in my plan and very expensive) so I used the CityMaps2Go which is a GPS map who doesn't need data to locate you and show you direction. I used it a lot in 4 days and This annoying message pop up every single time I open the app even when the app was running in the background when you switch back on it the message pop up again and again.

Just sent a feedback to Apple. Can't believe they didn't fix this problem. This topic date from a year ago !!!!!

I know this is an old discussion, but I think I may have found a workaround...

    Settings

    General

Scroll down to Restrictions, enter your passcode and select Enable Restrictions

Scroll down to the bottom of this list and click Cellular Data Use, select Don't Allow Changes

I have cellular data turned off for multiple apps including podcasts, and have not seen the alert popup even after quitting and restarting those apps.  I'm still on iOS 7.1.2, can someone check if this works for iOS 8?

    Hope this helps.
