Oct 10, 2013 10:43 AM in response to Rhonda39by OGELTHORPE,You could run an Apple Hardware Test:

It might be helpful if you indicated what you were doing at the time when you encountered the problem.
Ciao.

Oct 10, 2013 10:54 AM in response to OGELTHORPEby Rhonda39,Thank you.
I was streaming tv last night. Put it to sleep. This morning it would not turn on. I held the power button about 5 seconds and it finally came on and noted it encountered a problem.
Hardware test? Where is that?

Oct 10, 2013 11:01 AM in response to Rhonda39by John Galt,After it restarted, did you see a dialog box resembling this one:
If so, next time it occurs click Report...
Before you send it to Apple, copy the text of the report. Paste it in a reply. Remove or obscure any personal information, should it appear.
If problem persists please determine if it also occurs in "Safe Mode":
- Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
- Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
- To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

Oct 10, 2013 11:16 AM in response to John Galtby Rhonda39,Yes it did show a message like this. It will not go into hardware test. I hit the power button, then hold the D key before the grey start up screen appears. I hold the D key continuously and it eventually loads to my home screen.

Read the document linked by OGELTHORPE:
... To start AHT on these computers make sure the Applications Install Disc 2 is inserted into the built-in optical drive
Hold the D key while starting your Mac with that disc already inserted.

Oct 13, 2013 11:41 AM in response to Rhonda39by jonathanfromsgp,Hi Everyone,
I hope I am not posting my issue in the wrong community. I am new here and I tried to find the right community to post to.
Basically, I am an Apple fan and I love and own Apple products and I am looking to purchase more in the future. However the recent MBP failure has made me lose faith.
I own a 15 inch MBP unibody mid 2010. A few months back (March/April 2013) my MBP suddenly experienced kernal panics and so I sent in my MBP to the Apple Authorised Service Provider. What I experienced:
- At times:
- Solid White Light with no chime and no beeping sound
- Most of the time:
- 3 beeping sound (Bad ram)
Upon diagnosis, I was told that it was a RAM issue. I changed my ram. After about 4 months (August 2013), I started experiencing erros and panics again with the 3 beeps. I trusted the diagnosis that it could still be a ram problem. Hence I went to change my RAM. After about a month plus (Sept - Oct 2013), i started experiencing shutdowns about once a week. Upon restart I got the message of whether I would like to report the error. Unfortunately, I have not read the advice from communities about saving the kernel panic reports and hence I have nothing to show all of you.
My MBP died a few days ago and this is the issue I am experiencing. When I press the 'on' button, the fans spin and the HDD is all right. however, the screen remains black and the indicator light remains solid white. After about 15 seconds, the MBP automatically shuts down. I am unable to boot up at all and cannot access any kernel panic reports whatsoever. I did SMC reset and PRAM reset etc but to no avail.
I believe its a logic board issue that will cost me 900 CAD. I am unable to afford that and I came across articles saying that Mid 2010 15 inch MBP had defects in their NVIDIA graphics card and that the logic board could be replaced FOC. I am wondering if I do qualify for this free replacement. I currently do not have any applecare whatsoever as well. Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you very much.

Oct 13, 2013 11:43 AM in response to jonathanfromsgpby jonathanfromsgp,Just to add, I am unable to start my MBP up in Safe Mode as well. I cannot boot it up at all. Also, i understand that technology does fail but reading about so many failures in MBP models similar to mine makes me wonder if I am experiencing the same issues. Thank you.
