I have my ipad mini and iphone 5s synced to my icloud.
When I send a text message (SMS or iMessage) from my iphone, answers come back on my ipad and not my iphone.
How can I prioritise messages to only receive on iphone first or better still on both devices?

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately the message settings in settings is greyed out and not editable on my ipad as it syncs straight from iCloud. Any idea how I change the ipad so icloud and messages are accesable?

Syncing with icloud should not have anything to do with it. And based on what you describe it is the Phone's settings you should be more concerned about. I'm not aware of any Restrictions settings for Messages. On the Phone you might try signing out and signing back in to your AppleID (Settings app > Messages > Send & Receive > AppleId.
Check the send and receive address on both devices (Settings app > Messages > Send and Receive) and make sure they match.
