Q: Devices fail to connect to iOS7 hotspot after sleep

I'm new to hotspotting and this may just be one of those annoying issues.

I set up an iPhone 5s (iOS7.0.2) as a wifi hotspot. I connect my laptop and ipad, everyone is happy. The laptop or iPad goes to sleep and when it awakes it can't find the iPhone hotspot. The hotspot is not even listed in the available network pulldown menu. Reset the iPhone and the devices discover the hotspot, everyone is happy agian until someone goes to sleep.

What am I doing wrong.. besides using a klugey apple product

    Hello Yositimy,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like the wifi connection from your personal hoptspot is not being spotted when the connected devices go to sleep, then wake up later.

I want to recommend these troubleshooting steps from the article named:

    iOS: Troubleshooting Personal Hotspot

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2756

    1. Try disabling and reenabling Personal Hotspot from Settings > Personal Hotspot or Settings > General > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
    2. Install the latest version of iOS. Tap Settings > General > Software Update.
    3. Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    4. If none of the previous steps resolves your issue, restore the iPhone.

    Cheers,

    Sterling

Thanks for the try but I've been through those troubleshooting steps (they were of no help) and also have researched other support forums.

This just appears to be a bug in iOS7 without a solution and perhaps previous versions for which I have no experience.

There are a couple work arounds. I found that pulling up the settings> personal hot spot screen then toggling hotspot off and on and then loitering on the settings screen until the other devices discover the hot spot will kick things off. You only have to loiter a few seconds, but if you close the screen before other devices discover the hot spot, they will not find it. It apears, in this case, the iOS7 hotspot is discoverable only when the settings screen is active.... dunno why but that seems to be a better work around for the bug than toggling power on the iPhone.

    Hi,

This is not a solution at all but when i have to use hotspot, i do turn off the screen auto lock in pad, which is set bydefault to 2 minutes. I simply switch to "never" turn off the screen option and ipad seems to be connected.

Most probably you already knew it but anyway.

    Regards,

Yes I am also experiencing the same problem. And need to toggle the hotspot on an off before everything got reconnected again. This happened with my new iPad air 128GB. I have never had this problem with iPad mini ios7.

I wouldn't leave the screen on all the time with my iPad air as this would consume a lot more power.

    Please help!!

Ok I think I found the temporary solution. I was able to keep the connection between my iphone and iPad by having my certain iPad apps logged in and enabled push option during app initialization. So I logged into facebook app, twitter app, evernote app, pages app, and it seemed the disconnection resolved. I guess those apps kept the connection on even the screen is locked and off?

I will see for the next few days if problems are really solved.

Thanks for the workaround information jlingo, but I don't see this as a solution. Please fix this Apple as I have just been on holiday for a week and have had to constantly keep resetting the iPhone hotspot to get internet access! With multiple users (4) it seems to last longer if a device goes to sleep, but if only 1 devices is using the hotspot and goes to sleep the hotspot disappears and is no longer visible on any device of the other devices which are scanning for the hotspot.

I purchased 40 iPads for my company with the hotspot being the reason why. To find out there is such a glitch is a load of crap. Apples only response is wait for an update and hope they resolve it in there. If apple is reading this I demand you issue us a refund or solve the problem. You guys seem incompetent. Prove me wrong.

I'm new to utilizing the personal hotspot feature on my iPhone, but I'm irritated to discover that this problem is a long running iOS bug. Hard to believe that Apple would let this one go for so long. Dissappointing.

I have been using iphone 5 personal hotspot from last few months after upgrading to ios 7. iOS is updated. Wi Fi hotspot is intermittently available to other devices, including Apple own device ipad, Apple TV & laptop. Kept on trying, make personal hotspot off & on, many times & suddenly it appears in all device. Connection is lost intermittently. Experience is so unreliable & many times felt bad in user community... People say, u r facing problem even after carrying Apple device.

    Needs quick resolution.

I have finally found a solution that works for me.

To use my iphone (4s) as a hotspot and connect to my ipad (3) :

ipad settings: Cell Data OFF Wifi OFF Bluetooth ON.

iphone settings: Cell Data ON. Bluetooth ON. Personal hotspot ON. Wifi OFF (in that order)

I can connect the ipad to the iphone's hotspot using bluetooth and it works with no interruptions.

I am able to close down all apps on my iphone (including settings) and turn off the screen. The hotspot keeps broadcasting a signal.

A bit of a pain, but it works every time for me and has never disconnected.

Too bad Apple can't seem to come up with a fix!!
