Alert at itunes launch every time: The itunes volume is turned all the way down
Actually, I finally fixed this problem, and I will share the fix here (since I searched for this topic in the iTunes for Mac support community and didn't find anything):
I was launching iTunes and always getting an alert that said,
"The iTunes volume is currently turned all the way down.
To change the volume, drag the slider at the top of the iTunes window."
This was particularly annoying for me since I use software to automatedly record Internet radio ("time-shifting") when I'm away from my computer, and this alert would just sit there after iTunes launch, and stop the radio station from starting up and thus recording.
I tried setting the volume to max, then quitting and relaunching, but still, the alert displayed - and the volume slider was, again, all the way down.
HERE'S THE FIX: in the main iTunes window, to the right of the upper-left volume slider, is a little icon, that I guess represents speakers? It's a rectangular box with an up-pointing triangle at the bottom. If you hover the mouse over it, after a few seconds, the help comment says "Choose which speakers to use."
Anyway, I clicked it, and up came a little window that had "Single" and "Multiple" buttons, and the choice between Computer speakers, and what I think is AirPlay speakers (which I've never used) - it had the name I gave to my Airport Express wireless router.
The button already chosen was "Single", but all it had was a checkmark next to it - no volume control. I chose "Multiple" instead, and, VOILA!, there's two sliders that were all the way down.
So I slid the volume all the way up (for me, the two sliders dragged in tandem), then rechose "Single" and clicked outside the little window to dismiss it.
That's the fix. Not sure how that slider got slid down to volume = zero, but since then, I've never seen the alert again.
But back to the text of the alert - I think it could be worded better. When it says, "to change the volume, drag the slider at the top of the iTunes window", you think they're talking about the regular old volume slider that's been in iTunes since iTunes 1.0. That does bring the volume up, BUT - you still get the alert at launch every time, as well as the volume being down again.
What the alert should really say, to help the user fix the problem permanently, is something like this:
"To change the volume from being turned all down on launch, click the speaker chooser <or whatever it's called> button next to the volume slider, select Multiple, then slide the volume to the right as desired."
That's a mouthful, so I hope they could word it better, but at least, it would give the user a clue.
