AIM File Sharing

This has got to be a common question. I'm a new MAC user. Just got an MacBook. I have several friends on AIM that I share directories with (files). NOT file transfer, IChat lets you do that, but file sharing using AIM. I can do a "get files" from AIM open with a friend and look right into a directory that they have decided to share with me.

I cannot, for the life of me, get AIM to work on my MAC. The versions I have downloaded start Excel for some reason.

Any advice? This is probably an old old question but, hey, I'm new and i've done all the googling I can on this topic with no answers.
