External Hard Drive Search

Does anyone have an external hard drive they can recommend that will allow me to simply drag & drop files onto it rather than one that will just automatically back-up all the files on my computer? I bought a Seagate Back Up Plus, but it isn't what I wanted and the people at the Mac store had no idea about the difference between the ones they carried. So any recommendations would be very helpful.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

All HD are the same, actually, except in quality, there are only 4 HD mfg. on earth (conventional HD).

Your Segate WILL let you "just drag and drop" files, you dont have to use it as a time machine.

Go to FINDER> preferences > general > check boxes hard disks, and external disks

your seagate will show up on desktop, open it, drag and drap whatever you want.

Any NEW out of box HD that has any software bundled on the drive to "improve.....help", .....ignore it, its all trashware , useless and sometimes worse.

All new in box HD should be formatted, and made to be a "blank brick" to do with as you want.

Segate external HD is fine, ...stay away from WD drives and youll be fine 😊

Your seagate backup plus......the "backup plus" part means this...... NOTHING

There are several HD that are labeled "backup plus", or "portable" , or "data plus"....etc etc.

all these catch words on USB 2.5" HD mean 100% absolutely nothing whatsoever. 😉

A hard drive is a hard drive is a hard drive. All USB 2.5" HD contents contain 4 things,..... a conventional HD,.. a sata card,.. the plastic/metal box, ...and the USB cable.

Any hard drive will do what you want, it is simply a matter of how you set it up. You can even do this with the one you have.

When you first connect an empty external drive the Mac asks if you want to use it for Time Machine back up. Just say no.

If you erase the drive that you have using Disk Utility, you can treat it as just another external drive and drag and drop to it. Just make sure you tell the Mac - you only have to do this once - that it is not a Time Machine back up.

Seagate is great, but seagate and WD have recently started putting "less than useless" garbage-ware on the drives to "help....improve....blah blah".

whatevery fluffy buzzwords are on the box of a USB HD,.....its all rainbows and unicorns (a story/ fable/ nonsense). 😊

i.e. "backup plus"......."restore station"......"archive solution". etc.
