MP4 to MP3 conversion (see below)

Gave up searching for Mac apps after 2 frustrating hours. Don't mind paying for one that works.

Need to convert an iTunes purchased album to MP3. It has to be recorded to a CD-R disc, that will play on the stereo.

Thanks for any help!

iMac (20-inch Mid 2007), Mac OS X (10.6.8), 3MB RAM, 2 backup drives

What you refer to as an MP3 CD-R is just a plain old CD-R that you have burned MP3 files on. (It's called a data disk.) They only play in CD players that are capable of playing MP3s from disk - most CD players cannot do this - check your CD player to see if it supports playback of MP3s on CD-R disks.

iTunes can convert MP4 audio files into MP3 but does not burn data disks. iTunes only burns "playable" CDs, meaning they are formatted exactly the same way a commercial audio CD is formatted. This is not the same as a data disk.

The best way to burn your MP3's to a CD-R is convert them to MP3, export the MP3's from iTunes, then use the Finder to burn the files to a blank CD-R.

are you trying to burn a normal audio cd or to burn mp3 files on a cd-r as data files?

this is a big difference

if you just want to convert then finding programs which does that is pretty easy

Sorry MartinR--interupted by a phone call.

ITunes will not convert songs to MP3 in 10.6.8, just AAC, and the files are already ACC.

The stereo CD player will play Audio MP3 music discs. Have done it before using Switch 1.4.0, but it isn't working. Tried a newer version, but it did not work. Tried Toast-did not work. The Burn folder does not work.

Wish I could remember how this was done before . . . the not-so good part of aging.

I dont understand why you feel it's nessesary to make the mp4 to mp3 first

the end burning make the audio into something else then both mp4 and mp3

when you burn audio cd

any selfrespecing burning programs should be able to burn mp4 into cd digital audio as easy as burning mp3 into digital audio

yout process is kinda like downloading a image in the form of a png file and then converting the png file to a jpg file before printing it

I don't know what version of iTunes you are using or how you are trying to do the conversion, but I have iTunes 10.7 on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and it converts to MP3 just fine.

In iTunes > Preferences > General > Import Settings select MP3 Encoder then OK. Then select the tracks you want to convert to MP3 and do Advanced > Create MP3 Version. Works perfectly.

There are CD players that are capable of playing what are known as "MP3 disks" which are just CD-Rs that have MP3 files burned on them, or USB flash disks with MP3 files on them. gottscheer wants to create MP3 CD-R disks.

There are some (relatively few) newer CD players that are also capable of playing MP4 audio files, but I haven't seen many of these around.

You have to check the specs on your specific CD player to verify what kind of disks and files it can play.

Yes, but this creates a "playable" CD audio disk, which has its own unique format and the tracks are encoded as AIFF files. This is how commercial CD disks are encoded & burned. It's not the same as an MP3 disk.

Rudegar, it's because iTunes won't allow me to convert MP4s to MP3s in 10.6.8.

my whole point is that you should not have to make anything mp3 at all

mp3 and mp4 are 2 digital compression formats

cd digital audio is uncompressed

if one burn mp3 or mp4 to an audio cd produce the same ditital audio stream burned on the cd
