My DVD player is not working with any type of DVD. It comes up with the error: Valid Device Not Found For Playback (-10017). VLC is also having issues even after updates and will play audio but not picture.

Try a diff DVD. If same the laser lens is likely dirty
Your DVD Superdrive has failed. You have 2 options.
1) Have Apple replace it, for around $120.
2) Buy any brand external DVD drive that connects by USB port and it will work with your Mac. It does not have to have the Apple name on it or be sold by Apple for it to work on your Mac. Most cost around $30 and work much better than the Apple Superdrive.
Have you tired cleaning the lens? Often that will restore functionality.
Install a DVD lens cleaning disk.
If you have compressed air available, a few shots in the slot may solve the issue.
Take a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth) and wrap it around a business card and gently insert it inside the slot.
If no success, bring it to an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.
