CDMA versus GSM two different systems, aren't compatible with one another. Try to get CDMA SIM with your carrier or order from US and pay lots of money to call..

The support article Carolyn gave you a link for will not help you, as that is not your problem. Invalid sim means you purchased a carrier locked iPhone, NOT an unlocked iPhone.

Contract free has nothing to do with whether an iPhone is officially unlocked or not. All contract free means is that you are not under a contract obligation.

What's the model number of your phone? Settings>General>About, or on the box.

Your iPhone is network locked (to a US carrier)

All iPhone 5s currently on sale are locked although the T-Mobile one is available contract free (Different from being unlocked)

Apple has not yet released for sale an officially unlocked 5S in the USA.

However the Verizon model does have the GSM/LTE SIM card unlocked for international roaming.

The phone still needs to be activated on the Verizon CDMA network first.

The T-Mobile model may also need to be activated in the USA using a US SIM before being able to swaped out for a foreign SIM card.

Hate to be the bearer of really bad news, but you purchased a Sprint iPhone, & that phone will only acticvate on Sprint's network in the US. That phone is useless to you, as Sprint will not unlock the sim slot unless you are a customer, using the phone, on their network in the US. Return it for a refund, if you can...if purchased from Apple, you have 30 days from the date of purchase to do so. Otherwise, sell it on eBay.
