How do I reformat my hard disk?
I've been asked to reformat the hard disk and repairing it afterwards. I'm clueless as to how to reformat it I'm a beginner in Mac technology.

Use the OS disk that came with your system. Boot from it by restarting and holding the 'C' key. There should be some utilities so you can use Disk Utility to Repair and Format your Macintosh HD.
Here is a useful link you may want to use on the disk utility:

Well that presents some challenges. Do you have any computer experience?
Becuase if you don't, it might be better to let a local professional do it for you until you learn more about how computers work first.
If your willing to have a go at it, I'll provide a step by step instruction, but you have to answer some questions first.
1: Is there any data on the machine in the form of users files, like music, pictures, movies or documents that you want to save? These will have to be transfered to a exteranl drive via the drag and drop copying method or copying and pasting sometimes works also. The backup drive then needs to be unmounted (dragged to the Trash can/ejected) and disconnected.
If the machine is not booting and you need to get a copy of data off, this presents some more additional challenges, please let us know.
2: We need some information about the particular machine model. You can get this by booting the machine up by pressing the power button and logging in, then selecting the Apple menu at the top left corner and selecting About This Mac > More Information, window appears.
Look for a
1: Model identifier (like MacbookPro 8,3)
2: OS X operating system version (like OS X 10.6.4)
3: RAM amount (like 4GB)
Another method is to double click on the System Profiler program in your Applications > Utilities folder. This is the same information.
If the machine is not booting, then you need to locate the serial number and tell us the last 4 digits of that so we can look it up.

3: You must tell us if you have any OS X install disks that came with the machine and what they are and look like.
