iMovie '11 crashes w/ Drobo 5D is plugged in

iMovie '11 freezes with the spinning beach ball of death when I have my Drobo 5D plugged in via ThunderBolt. Which kind of defeats putting my videos on the Drobo to work from.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Hi

How is the Drobo 5D - formatted ?

• MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs)

• DOS / FAT32 / Mac OS Exchange - Works for most other things - BUT NOT FOR VIDEO

No matter if You use iMovie or FinalCut or Adobe Premiere - at 4Gb it cut's the video clips = resulting in not working at all.

Even a temporarily storage of Video material on such a disk = DISASTER - most common way this happen when using net-work / Server storage as they to > 90% are wrongly formatted.
