Q: Unable to toggle Snapping, Skimming etc

I seem to have lost the ability to toggle snapping, skimming etc on and off.

This is very annoying.

Whether I use keyboard shortcuts, the mouse to click the toolbar icons, or select them in "View" they stay on all the time.

Trashed prefs, rebooted Mac, to no avail.

Any ideas anyone?

Andy

    Try Revert to Original Layout.

Russ - I was so excited when I read your suggestion - Revert sometimes cures odd things like this.

I was about to send you an eKiss (or maybe a white tick on a green background instead) - but sadly it didn't work.

(What's the opposite of an eKiss)?

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, but no luck I'm afraid.

    Andy,

Is this happening with all your projects?

    Thanks Russ,

Same in another project - I'll check some others later (have to go out for an hour now).

Trashed FCP X and because the App Store shows it as installed - even with trash emptied, all external HDs, Time Machine and a networked iMac powered off, I couldn't re-download it. So I restored the App from June (from TM)still the same issue.

Repaired permissions - still no toggle.

Short of a new user acount and all the delights that entails, I'm out of ideas now.

What OS and software version is this?

In Terminal try running this string

    defaults delete com.apple.FinalCut

    Tom,

    Thanks for your help.

The OS is stated below the question - FCP X version is 10.0.9.

Can you be more specific about the Terminal suggestion?

Is this a temporary thing so that the App Store doesn't see FCP X as installed?

Do I need to delete it from Terminal to allow FCP X to work again - I know very litte about Terminal - and usually try to avoid it if I can (but in this case, I'm willing to have a go).

Lastly, it occurred to me I'm using a few FX Factory plugins, so I disabled all of them - but it had no effect on the problem.

Currently trashing the prefs doesn't actually reset the application. This terminal string does a scorched earth wipe of your FCP prefs and actually resets the application to its default state.

I ran the string (defaults delete com.apple.FinalCut) in Terminal but it made no difference.

Should I have trashed the application first?

Next, I created a new user on my Mac and the problem went away instantly.

Guess I must do something drastic or plod along with skimming and snapping permanently on.

Interestingly, when I restored the application from Time Machine, of course the version was 10.0.8 - but it was still showing as 10.0.9 when the app was launching.

When I created the new user and logged into that, the version was 10.0.8 and I got an update notice from the App Store.

I assume the application was closed.

If making a new user fixed it the problem is likely in the OS, a system setting that's effecting the application behavior, maybe a system keyboard preference.

    You did try repairing permissions.

I don't know how you feel about running a housekeeping app like OnyX, but I think if Iwere in your position, and found that the new user eliminated those problems, I'd probably run pretty much the full gamut of their utlitilies to see what they turned up.

    Good luck.

    Will check this.

Thanks Russ - I don't have much faith in those apps (maybe they've improved of late though).

Personally, I prefer to do a fresh reinstall - although it's tedious in the extreme.

My problem now is that I apparently have no HD Recovery Drive - and for some reason, the Mountain Lion download from the App Store is hanging at 425 MB!

Never mind, it's clearly a test of my patience...

There's a new post on this (snapping issue) so maybe it's a bug?

I see another thread has appeared about this, so you are not alone, though I'm sure that's not much consolation. Really don't know why this would be happening.
