There is no "Use audio for:" option on my macbook pro. How can I then use the audio output as an audio input?

Everything is in the question. I've been trying to find a good answer that doesn't require me to buy an additional item in order to turn my audio output as an input but have not succeeded in doing so.

some help would be great,

Thanks

Sez here the MacBook Pro (model 9,2) has a combination port.User uploaded file

It works with iPhone-style headsets with the integrated mic but not with anything else I can find that uses the same TRRS plug. The Sound PrefPane never recognizes any other device.

This is with the iPhone headset plugged it:

This is with any other device plugged in (or nothing: it has no effect):

I'd like to know how those headsets are wired to make this work. It's not a powered input and it can't be complicated, given how little room there is to work.
