Download the movie ahead of time but be aware of the time limitation...
"You have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and 24 hours (in the US) or 48 hours (elsewhere) after you've started viewing to finish it. Once the rental period expires, the movie will disappear from your iTunes library."

Carolyn, Thanks for your response. The problem I'm encountering takes place after the rented movie is downloaded
on to my iPad and I attempt to watch it while in flight on the plane. The movie won't open and says my device is not authorized. When I made mention to my daughter, she said the very same thing happened to her husband on his last flight. He also has the newest update.
I just had the same thing happen. I downloaded rentals. Said 29 days to go. When i got on the plane without internet (airplane mode), they show expired and will not play. When I got to my destination, and turned the internet back on, they showed fine 28 days remaining.
This makes watching rentails offline completely unusable. Please fix this.
Try watching them through the Videos app after downloading and not with the iTunes app. Not sure if it works with rentals but does with standard purchases.
