Do we need to reinstall Mac OS X 10.4.7?

Macfixit in http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2006062914492384
referred:

“Apple has released a revised version of the Mac OS X 10.4.7 updater for Intel-based Macs due to the omission of some files related to OpenGL performance.”
“it appears that Apple made the revision June 29th, so you should re-apply the delta or the combo updater to make sure you have the new files”

I upgraded to 10.4.7 using software Update on June 27th.
So, do I have to download the new package named MacOSXUpd10.4.7Intel.dmg and reinstall it?
Or, will Apple correct this situation with softtware update again?

Thank you

You have two options: (1) download the newly released Delta updater from Apple's download site; or (2) download the Combo updater. Reinstall. That's all there is to it. I would recommend it, and it doesn't hurt anything to do it. Personally, I would recommend always using the Combo updater whenever a new system upgrade is released. I also recommend the following upgrade procedure:

1. Repair your hard drive and permissions.
2. Make a bootable backup of the current working system.
3. Download the Combo Updater.
4. Restart the computer in safe mode.
5. Install the update.
6. Restart the computer.

I have still read the topic “More on re-released Intel version” in http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060630084130887
about: "It appears that Apple made the revision at around 1:30 PST yesterday (June 29th) ..."

The horse has already spoken, officially. Please give me the link to the official Apple position.

1. Repair my hard drive and permissions with Disk Utility?
2. May I create a bootable clone of OS X? How? Is it important?
3. I used before Mac OS X 10.4.6 than shouldn't I use the Delta Updater instead of the Combo Updater or even so do you recomend this one?
4. The safe mode (shift key at restart). Do I have to install the update with the computer in safe mode? Why?

Thank you again

A. Repair drive and permissions
Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.

B. Create a Bootable Clone (Only important if when your system malfunctions.)
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities.
2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
5. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

C. Always best to upgrade using Combo Updaters. But the choice is yours.
D. No you don't need to start in Safe Mode, but Safe Mode assures that Spotlight is off, disables third-party extensions that could cause problems. But the choice is yours. Proceed at your own risk.

Hello again, after weekend, and thank you for help.
A > I did that and it's all OK.
B > I have some questions:
1. Is it correct to make a bootable clone from my Startup Volume if my OS X 10.4.7 must be re-updated?
2. Restore in DU is making a Backup of the whole HD and because of that we need a destination volume with the same capacity?
3. Beyond this, is there a way of making only a bootable DVD with Mac OS X only and some applications (DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro)?

C > Delta or Combo updater:
1. I have downloaded Delta Updater (133 MB) and first instalation of my MBP was 10.4.5 and some days ago 10.4.7. (always with Sofware Upadte) Is it mandatory to download the 215 MB Combo updater? Any "problem" If I choose the Delta Updater?
2. Choice is mine but I prefer the essential and safe things. Better was Apple to solve this with SU. Any idea?
D > Do you recommend to use safe mode even upggrading with Software Update?

1. Is it correct to make a bootable clone from my Startup Volume if my OS X 10.4.7 must be re-updated?

Yes, it's OK. You can update OS X on any volume to keep it up to date or re-clone or use other backup software to make incremental backups to keep a backup current with the main volume. Some good backup apps are Retrospect, Synchronize! Pro X, Deja Vu, and Super Duper.

2. Restore in DU is making a Backup of the whole HD and because of that we need a destination volume with the same capacity?

Yes. That's correct. You want a backup volume large enough to contain the main hard drive. Free space is not copied.

3. Beyond this, is there a way of making only a bootable DVD with Mac OS X only and some applications (DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro)?

Not at the present time. Neither DiskWarrior nor TechTool Pro are compatible with Intel Macs, although MicroMat has released a Beta version of TT Pro that is compatible. When it is fully released it will be available on a bootable disc.

1. I have downloaded Delta Updater (133 MB) and first instalation of my MBP was 10.4.5 and some days ago 10.4.7. (always with Sofware Upadte) Is it mandatory to download the 215 MB Combo updater? Any "problem" If I choose the Delta Updater?

In general there should not be a problem using the Delta updater nor updating by Software Update. However, sometimes problems arise after the update that are frequently resolved by installing the Combo Updater. Because of that I recommend using the Combo Updater as a precautionary measure.

Do you recommend to use safe mode even upggrading with Software Update?

Yes. Upgrading in safe mode after repairing the hard drive and permissions will assure the most trouble-free results. Using safe mode turns off Spotlight and removes the potential for third-party software to interfere with the upgrade process.

I hope this answers your questions. If I have omitted any information please ask.

Thank you for your help.
I upgrade now with Combo.
It's not a solved question but I think you are a good teacher.
I know "Why reward points?" and I should give you only 5 for asking.

Is it normal 135º F with 2-10% CPU activity (CoreDuo Temp) or 106º F (Temperature Monitor)?
Is it normal Left Fan always on and Rigth Fan almost off?

Thank you again.

May MBP stays on all day. I typically have Finder, Dashboard, Safari, MacReporter, and Mail running at all times. I have numerous haxies, CMMs, etc. also installed and a variety of other processes that are running in the background. I have my Energy Saver settings configured for maximum performance, the computer never goes to sleep, and only the screensaver kicks in if it's idle. My typical CoreDuoTemp measurements range from 20C (after being put to sleep for several hours) to 65C under 20 percent load. On occasion the temperature will get up to 75-80C under much heavier loads.

Normal temps during typical usage are 50-62C.
