Hi Mad, I understand that you also are against messing with the hosts file, but I want as often as possible stress the point.

About the recovery: that is no solution here because it just refreshes the OSX and (all OSX components), thus that makes only sense when system components have changed. All non system files stay there to do their dirty work.

In this case only a clean install (format and reinstall OSX) will be a robust solution when there is too much rubbish on the disk).

That assumes that "rubbish on the disk" is the root cause of these issues, which is certainly a strong possibility, but as you well know there can be many reasons. You suggested a discussion, so I just through out something that I've observed from talking to probably a couple hundred new Mavericks users and the fact that it worked for me when I doubted it would. Just threw it out for consideration since it only takes a few minutes and can't really hurt anything, assuming there's a solid backup available.

But you are steering the ship now, so I'm not pushing and don't feel a need to discuss it further.

You are right, we can do the Recovery, you never know, and it does not cost too much time.

My concern also is that the rubbish of all these apps then still much be cleaned. Even if the issue is solved.

And then the clean install solves everything at the same time.

When you want to try first a Recovery (not my first choice) your data are not touched, but ofcourse you have backed-up your data)!

When you want to do a clean install you must make sure that you have backups of your data, and you must reinstall all apps that you want (make a list first and be certain that you have the latest versions).
