My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Hi Lex (and anyone else willing to help),

I also have been having trouble with my Mac speed. It came on suddenly yesterday when I awakened my computer from sleep. The specific issues are that finder is especially slow. I have trouble opening folders on my desktop. But the browser windows have been slow as well, as in when I try to open a new tab. Youtube was particularly slow. Every time anything is slow the rainbow spinny icon pops up. Even writing this message was incredibly slow, it paused every 15 seconds. Thanks! I have my EtreCheck report:

Generally speaking, Lex wants you to "start a new thread and post the link here." unless there is one obvious problem and I'm not seeing anything like that here. That will get you the most attention from the largest number of troubleshooters instead of relying on a couple of us here who are still monitoring this way-to-long topic. It's just the way this forum works best.

You do have some out-of-date software installed, so I would start working through those. The obvious ones to me are:

Silverlight

DirectorShockwave

JavaAppletPlugin but check System Preferences->Java first to see why it's not automatically updating.

I hope you are using some other form of backup since you aren't using Time Machine. All hard drives fail, often somewhere around the three year point, so if there is anything on yours that you can't live without, you need to come up with a robust backup plan to preserve it.

Jul 20, 2014 10:16 AM in response to Linc Davis

Hi LincDavis!
I just saw the thread and my Mac suddenly (from one day to another) started running super slow! It's only like 3 months old. I launched Terminal and followed your instructions. This is what it said:

Jul 18 21:00:48 localhost kernel[0] <Debug>: Previous Shutdown Cause: -79

--- last message repeated 6 times ---

Jul 20 23:16:54 Madss-MacBook-Pro kernel[0] <Debug>: Process Setup Assistant [177] disabling system-wide I/O Throttling

Jul 21 00:57:40 localhost kernel[0] <Debug>: Previous Shutdown Cause: -79

I hope you have the time to reply to this message! In advance..Thank you

Jul 29, 2014 9:18 AM in response to dstu3

In an earlier post Madmacs0 is right: this thread is too long already. The best way to get more attention is to start a new thread.

I will give you an answer here, but as soon as you know how to start a new thread do it and start the link to it here, so that we find you easily. Of course, if we have it solved here already a new thread is not necessary.

Here we go:

I am surprised your mac runs at all: even in a Windows PC you must not mix more than one antivirus systems together, and in a mac you should not even install one. And also you have several "tools" that are not compatible.

Before you start uninstalling the software that has to go, open SystemPreferences, click Accounts, click the LoginItems tab, and remove all entries there, with the minus sign underneath. Then restart the mac.

Now all those will not run, they are still there but not running, and thus not taking memory resources.

Now you have to uninstall

Norton/Symantec software with the uninstaller; this is the first, restart after the uninstall.

Then:

Hotbox antivirus (and never download apps from Softonic anymore, only from trusted sites).

iAntivirus (pctools) and Peerguardian (pplogger, pploader), with the uninstaller;

Google Chrome, with the uninstaller: if you do not want to use Safari, use Firefox or Opera;

and Google Desktop;

and Google Musicmanager;

then:

Google updater with the uninstaller;

and:

mspot (again: never download apps from Softonic anymore, only from trusted sites).

multiclutch.

Pffff

now restart, and see how it goes, post an new list to see hw far we have come.

Lex

In an earlier post Madmacs0 is right: this thread is too long already. The best way to get more attention is to start a new thread.

Post the link here, like the others.

You have everything wrong that can be: MacKeeper, Omnibar and Genieo, and more. It is a miracle that it will run at all.

And you have hacked software (Adobe perhaps?).

Again:

I'm reasonably certain that Linc is no longer monitoring this discussion and rarely responds to "me too" requests in any case.

Your best bet is to start a new discussion outlining your problem and wait for Linc or somebody else to have you run any diagnostics. That will get you help a lot quicker from more troubleshooters and other users that currently share your problem.

That's just the way this forum works best.
