My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Hello Sally,

trusted sites: Of course Appstore, or the developer site (most of the time), never Softonic aor CNET Download.com Macupdate (also lately) in short: all these aggregator sites. Most of them build in malware in the software that you download.

If you hesitate about a software why not search on this forum.... And of course by being here you already know about a lot of crap software.

1. something unusual with your Matsushita disk.

Can you take your user data off and format again, then put your data back?

2. You have Sophos installed and probably run scans "at access". Better uninstall it completely, reinstall without autostarting and use it for manual scan only.

3. Take all items out of SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath. Restart. Adobe ResourceSynchronizer should never return. If you can, uninstall it.

Run a new etrecheck list after a day of use or so, and post it here: the Page-outs should not be more than .5-1 GB at max.

Formulate a backup strategy.

I am having the same issue....

Yes, you're having the same issue of continuing this sorry excuse for a discussion instead of starting your own. The usual results of posting "etrecheck" output on this site without even describing the problem are that you get destructive, time-wasting comments, such as telling you to remove "MacKeeper, " which according to the (unreliable) "etrecheck" output is not installed, and to remove "Glimmerblocker," which has nothing whatsoever to do with your problem and may be useful to you.

If you want something other than comments at that level of usefulness, start a new thread with the details of your problem. For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

Sep 18, 2014 12:26 AM in response to Linc Davis

No way to treat posters that come forward with an issue:

MacKeeper: at least leftovers are there.

Glimmerblocker is not recommended by the very very specialist Thomas Reed thesafemac.com.

You should read that site once in awhile.

For the rest I gather that you still are not over with your feud with Mr. Daniel.

For normal people his app is very helpful, maybe not for the (semi)gods.

I wish you good health with your bad indigestion,

Lex

Hi Lex!

I've had the same problem as described in this thread almost since I got my MacBook in 2011 (it runs slow and freezes). I am not really computer literate and my knowledge of how to solve my mac's problems is very limited, but I have tried a few things over the years and even took it once to the Mac Genius bar in Covent Garden (London). I have also erased and reinstalled twice but although it seemed better at first, improvement in the long term never really happened and it is actually getting worse over the years. I have checked all the posts on this thread one by one and downloaded and run EtreCheck (I have the report) to try to find what could be causing the problem, but I am not really sure what to do (I am a bit confused with all the answers to be honest!).

If I posted the report here, would you be able to help? Would it be better if I opened another discussion? Happy to follow your advice either way!

Many thanks in advance!

Edel:

A coincidence that I find this post, normally these long threads ar not followed much.

So I propose that you start a new thread in the Notebooks discussion, and post the link to that here.

Start with the same explanation, and elaborate with answers on following questions:

- Did Apple Genius test for hardware issues too?

- Before this Macbook, were you a Windows user?

- You started with Snow Leopard?

And then put in the etrechack list (made after a day of use preferably).

This is no longer the place to be posting new requests. As we've patiently told the last seemingly three hundred users, you need to start a new thread with a complete description of your problem and post a link to it here. I know something is slow, but have no idea what.

Nothing you have installed jumps out as a major contributor, but seeing uTorrent, the fact that you haven't updated to OS X 10.9.5 yet and you have disabled GateKeeper in your Security preferences might indicate you have installed the latest iWorm Trojan/Backdoor. Check Dr. Web announces new “iWorm” malware to find out.

Then stay away from Torrent sites in general and pirated software in particular; Keep System Preferences->Security & Privacy->General tab is never set to "Anywhere" again; and run Software Update until it tells you there are no more updates.
