Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I don't know how seagate got there but i think its pretty much gone now. I have done points 2 and 3 as you've said previously already, I'm not sure why it's still there. and with Autodesk, to make things easier...can i just uninstall it for now? I'm really bad with computers

The uninstaller wouldn't work so i had to uninstall it manually, I'm hoping I did it correctly.

    Now that's better.

    - uninstall Growl, SystemPreferences/Growl.

    - In User/yourname/Library/InternetPlugins/  delete the Bluestacks entry.

    - in MacintoshHD  /Library/InternetPlugins/  delete the AdobePDFViewer plugin.

and the Sliverlight plugin, and the Schockwave plugin, and the DivX plugin, and the Java plugin.

For my peace of mind, please make one or more screenshots of your Applications and your Utilities folder, (all apps and all utilities.

mmm, that is difficult to read.

What I saw already (and expected, is that you have CS5 and CS6 at the same time: is there a reason for that?

Edit: I follow with another post now.

You have to uninstall AVGCleaner before you go any further.

I read through the Apps list and the Utilities list.

I have never seen anything like it. I now understand why the Adbobe company makes a lot of profit....

    - Why do you have more versions of an application at the same time, for example Adobe Bridge CS5, CS5.1, CS6 ?

A lot of the apps that are there probably don't work, or not good.

There are also utilities that I advise against: iArchiver, SimplyRar, BatteryHealth, DiskDiag, Adobe DownloadAssistant, Adobe Reader. You do not need any of them, already in OSX. If you really want a Rar decompressor, use "The Unarchiver" (free, AppStore).

And a lot that you never use anymore (Teamviewer,

My first impression is to make a clean install of OSX, and then only install your work apps, and then only the latest version. Let's discuss this now.

uTorrent & previously mentioned hosts file would be my guess.

    Hi mad,

perhaps uTorrent, but not the hosts file I think: the hosts file just blocks the Adobe websites (which is not a bad idea if you have hacked versions).

@mad and @all: As a matter of fact it is never a good idea to mess with the hosts file.

Which I previously told you I agree with 100%. Why do you keep thinking I support messing with the hosts file?

i deleted all those. As for the adobe bridge, is it not because i have different programs that are cs 5 and cs6. my photoshop is cs5 and my premiere pro is cs6??? So i should install OS X again or...??

This page might help OS compatibility and FAQs for Mac OS Mavericks (v10.9). If I'm reading it correctly, only CS6 is fully compatible.
