Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

My first impression is to make a clean install of OSX, and then only install your work apps, and then only the latest version.

I would guess that nine out of ten Mavericks users have benefited from a simple OS X restore from the Recovery Partition. I know that when I had some major issues with 10.9 in the early days, that took care of everything.  It's relatively fast, only restores the OS and doesn't disturb any User files. It doesn't touch third party apps, though, so if it doesn't work, then a clean install is definitely in order.

Oh, and let's not forget that Flash Player update.

Hi Mad, I understand that you also are against messing with the hosts file, but I want as often as possible stress the point.

About the recovery: that is no solution here because it just refreshes the OSX and (all OSX components), thus that makes only sense when system components have changed. All non system files stay there to do their dirty work.

In this case only a clean install (format and reinstall OSX) will be a robust solution when there is too much rubbish on the disk).

That assumes that "rubbish on the disk" is the root cause of these issues, which is certainly a strong possibility, but as you well know there can be many reasons.  You suggested a discussion, so I just through out something that I've observed from talking to probably a couple hundred new Mavericks users and the fact that it worked for me when I doubted it would. Just threw it out for consideration since it only takes a few minutes and can't really hurt anything, assuming there's a solid backup available.

But you are steering the ship now, so I'm not pushing and don't feel a need to discuss it further.

You are right, we can do the Recovery, you never know, and it does not cost too much time.

My concern also is that the rubbish of all these apps then still much be cleaned. Even if the issue is solved.

And then the clean install solves everything at the same time.

When you want to try first a Recovery (not my first choice) your data are not touched, but ofcourse you have backed-up your data)!

When you want to do a clean install you must make sure that you have backups of your data, and you must reinstall all apps that you want (make a list first and be certain that you have the latest versions).

your remark: "and also, is it wierd that all the messages in this forum has gone blank?"

    They are there now.

    Yes.

For a clean install you can read this article, which is an easy to understand expose about the clean install.

I can imagine, seeing your list.

This thread is too long already. To get more attention, post your list in a new thread and post the link here, so that we find you quickly. In the mean time I will prepare a report what to do based on this list
