Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I take it you haven't read through this thread as there are some obvious things that others have been told to remove immediately. It's not really fair to take advantage of people like Lex in this manner as it makes us think you value your time more than the troubleshooters here. None of us are paid for our time here so the least you could do is take advantage of the information already presented and then start asking additional questions. I love helping people as long as they make an effort to help themselves.

Jame, please make a new thread with this etrecheck list, and post the link here, so that I find you easily. This thread is already too long.

Hi...my mac book pro got really slow recently, too...I've read through the discussions and started by uinstalling some programs and emptying my downloads folder which seems to have already helped but there's still some weird things here, like 'TuneupMyMac' and 'iTunesHelper' with warning signs next to them showing in the login items...or should those be there? I've run etrecheck and wonder if somebody would be able to have look at my thread and give me some feedback...perhaps there's something I could improve...I'd really appreaciate it! thank you in advance! MadMacs0 and LexShellings, THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH for all your help! After long hours of absorbing a lot of new information it seems my mac is back on track...I've run the etre check again and the issues you pointed out earlier are gone now and my mac's running at its normal speed. I'm posting here because, apparently, I'm not authorized to go into the thread I started...don't know why. THANKS AGAIN!

It would appear that the hosts have deleted the entire discussion for some unknown reason. There's been a lot of that going on recently for some reason.

Glad you are back in business.

That happens when someone in the thread plays against the rules. I have not seen what it was.

The etrecheck list is gone too, maybe start all over again with yet another new thread, because this one is reallly too long...

Hi Lex, I've been reading this thread, I've deleted some old unused bits of software. My question is this has happened over the last three days, suddenly, I haven't downloaded any new software for a while, so why now is slowing down and turning jittery?

    Hi Lex --

MacBook Pro is running very slow; please help. Would appreciate any advise on how to speed it up saving me from having to watch the spinning ball all day long. Computer has been running notably slower for past 6 months or so; started about the time latest OSX came out. Many thanks!
