Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    Hi LexSchellings

    My late 2011 13" MacBook Pro started running very slow a couple of weeks ago. I downloaded an app (Memory diag) from app store, that indicates that Safari is using "significant memory usage". After running EtreCheck, I posted my results on this thread:

    I'd really appreaciate it, if you would help me! Thank you in advance.

    The number of people that succeed in picking this thread from the vast wasteland of the Internet, yet simultaneously overlook the ubiquitous MacKeeper, boggles the mind.

    After you have completely removed MacKeeper, start a new thread and come back to let Lex know where it is. You still have too much junk and not enough RAM to use it all, so I'm sure Lex can help you with that.

    This is not the place to post your information. Start a new discussion topic fully explaining your situation and then post the EtreCheck info. If you want Lex's help then come back here with a link to your new discussion and he'll probably join you when he has the time. That's just the way this forum works. New topic for each user with an issue unless you just want a general discussion topic.

    @John

    @Mad

    Hi, follow these last two and help. This is incredible (as John said). Don't let me do these alone, tow much sadness. We'll wait till we have the links to the new threads, this one is already too long anyway.

    Please a new thread please. Post the link to that thread here.

    In the meantime uninstall MacKeeper, see the zeobit site how to do that.

    As we've posted numerious times, if you want to discuss this topic in general, that's fine, but if you are here to solve your own personal issue then you are going about it in the wrong way.

    Please start a new discussion topic, explain your problems in detail (e.g. what's slow, etc.) along with the EtreCheck output and you'll much more help faster.  That's just the way these forums are designed to work.

    While you are waiting, you might want to get rid of some Adware you installed. See the Adware Removal Guide, starting with "Spigot".

    Then un-install MacKeeper in accordance with the developers guidelines. Look over the EtreCheck list to see if you recognize everything there as something you still need and use. If you really need to be running all that then you should start shopping for additional RAM as 4GB is the absolute minimum for Mavericks and your Page-outs number indicate you need more.

    Hi Mad, I may be wrong, but I have the feeling that, when the crapware is gone and the old SL software, the PageOuts may diminish (it was more than 2 days), we'll see. But for that model MBP it is rather easy to upgrade the ram
