Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I'm reasonably certain that Linc is no longer monitoring this discussion and rarely responds to "me too" requests in any case.

Your best bet is to start a new discussion outlining your problem and wait for Linc or somebody else to have you run any diagnostics. That will get you help a lot quicker from more troubleshooters and other users that currently share your problem.

That's just the way this forum works best.

One time should be enough. But I was reavelling.

I would appreciate that you start a new thread, this one is already too long.

You have a serious problem to solve and it is better when as much users here look at it.

I hope more of us will answer on your new post in a new thread (post the link here).

I would not know how to eliminate the damage that installing CleanMyMac has done, other than a real clean install of everything.

    There are other poblems too.

ps, I am not really very available, because I am travelling a lot in the next 7 days..

I'm almost certain that Linc stopped monitoring this old and way to long discussion and rarely accepts "me too" requests in any case.

Start a new topic and explain in detail what's wrong without posting the results of anything until somebody asks for it. You'll get much quicker answers from far more fellow users by doing that. It's just the way this forum works best.

    Hi Stephjonas!

One of your problems may be that there are unknown programs running in the background, which often causes the Macbook to run slower. To find out if there are programs running in the background, all you need to do is enter "Activity Monitor" (you can find this by going into applications, or searching it in the top right corner of the screen). Once you are in activity monitor there should be a bunch of programs running, there should be a column that is highlighted blue with the name "% CPU". In that column there are numbers beside the program running. If there are programs running over 75 - 100 (depending on how fast your Macbook is), that may be what is slowing your Macbook down. To get rid of these programs highlight the program that you would like to delete by clicking on it once and then clicking the "X" button in the top left of the "Activity Monitor", it should come up with a question saying: "Cancel, Force Quit, or Quit", click on the "Force Quit" button. That should speed things up...

If this doesn't work you may have downloaded a virus onto your system and may need to reset your Macbook. To find out how to do this search it on the net or in discussions on apple.com.

    Hope this helped
