Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Question: Is it normal for your computer to run slow when you, let's say, update your OS from Mountain Lion to Mavericks????

    Sally,

a lot to do: this thread is already too long and now any visit this one anymore, can you make a new thread and post the link here, it gives you so much more chance to interest a lot of good helpers here.

The worst is that you have installed CleanMyMac: a sure Mac killer.

Think about following: would it be feasible for you to make a backup of all user data that you want to keep (by hand), and download the latest versions of all applications that you really need (and avoid the hacked ones, there are free or cheaper solutions), from trusted sites, and then format your disk and start all over again: it will cost you much time, but you will be much better off for a long time.

But in any case start a new thread.

    Hi D-Boy,

not a bad idea. Normally however, I promote to solve issues before any upgrade.

    Lex,

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes I was afraid of that, that I would need to reinstall everything. I guess that's what I need to do.

Do you have any trusted suggested sites where I could download the applications? I will also avoid CleanMyMac 4 sure! Any suggested replacement app I could use?

    Thanks again Lex!

    Hello Sally,

trusted sites: Of course Appstore, or the developer site (most of the time), never Softonic aor CNET Download.com Macupdate (also lately) in short: all these aggregator sites. Most of them build in malware in the software that you download.

If you hesitate about a software why not search on this forum.... And of course by being here you already know about a lot of crap software.
