Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    1. something unusual with your Matsushita disk.

Can you take your user data off and format again, then put your data back?

    2. You have Sophos installed and probably run scans "at access". Better uninstall it completely, reinstall without autostarting and use it for manual scan only.

    3. Take all items out of SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, with the minus sign underneath. Restart. Adobe ResourceSynchronizer should never return. If you can, uninstall it.

Run a new etrecheck list after a day of use or so, and post it here: the Page-outs should not be more than .5-1 GB at max.

    Formulate a backup strategy.

The answer of John Galt says it all: you have the super crap software MacKeeper installed: read this thread and a lot of otherthreads about what you should do, and how.

Less important: I would also remove Glimmerblocker.

I am having the same issue....

Yes, you're having the same issue of continuing this sorry excuse for a discussion instead of starting your own. The usual results of posting "etrecheck" output on this site without even describing the problem are that you get destructive, time-wasting comments, such as telling you to remove "MacKeeper, " which according to the (unreliable) "etrecheck" output is not installed, and to remove "Glimmerblocker," which has nothing whatsoever to do with your problem and may be useful to you.

If you want something other than comments at that level of usefulness, start a new thread with the details of your problem. For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

No way to treat posters that come forward with an issue:

MacKeeper: at least leftovers are there.

Glimmerblocker is not recommended by the very very specialist Thomas Reed thesafemac.com.

You should read that site once in awhile.

For the rest I gather that you still are not over with your feud with Mr. Daniel.

For normal people his app is very helpful, maybe not for the (semi)gods.

I wish you good health with your bad indigestion,

I'm having some performance issues with my late 2011 MacBook Pro.  Was hoping I could get a little assistance from those who have been kind enough to lend a hand to others already.  I'm supposed to be the "computer guy" in my family, but I"m afraid they think too highly of my skills and this is over my head.  Have already created a separate thread and ran EtreCheck based solely on the recommendations I've seen on here previously.  I have no idea how to interpret so I'm asking for some advice....

    Here is my original thread...
