Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

And if you do not want to do that:

In Finder  click the GO menu, click GoToFolder, type  /private/etc/ and enter,

in that folder delete the  following file   Sysctl.conf

Uninstall the app with with you made the file (probably in an older OSX) if it is still there.

Then restart the Mac. Empty the Trash.

I seem to be having the same problem. Out of the blue, my macbook pro decided to run really slow...to the point where typing gets delayed. Help would be greatly appreciated

    You may have disk problems:

In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems  remove ALL entries with the minus sign underneath.

Then restart, and make backups backups and backups.

It may be already a lot faster.

In DiskUtility, do "repair disk' and see what it says. If it has no comments, Restart while holding the CMD+R keys, start DiskUtility in there and do the same again.

In addition to what Lex has said, you have accidentally installed Spigot adware. The safest, most efficient way to identify and optionally remove all currently known adware is by using AdwareMedic, developed by one of the forums malware gurus and a colleague of mine.

To understand why this happened and how to avoid it in the future please read John Galt's How to install adware.

I notice you have a lot of software that I've never heard of installed. Make sure that you know what it's for, that it's fully up-to-date and Yosemite compatible. As EtreCheck has already told you, FlashPlayer is way out-of-date and has been disabled by Apple.

Mad is right (thx), remove Spigot.

I would like to be sure that there is no disk problem first, but if there is not:

In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems  remove ALL entries with the minus sign underneath.

Then restart, and make backups backups and backups.

It may be already a lot faster.

You have software in there that is not on your mac, and (worse) you have doubles in there: enough to create havoc. I would advise you to have this LoginItems empty all the time.

    Also I would uninstall Growl.

And Chrome: if you want a browser next to Safari: use Firefox or Opera: fast, safe. Do not run more than one browser at the same time.

And the Android software, I am pretty sure you do not need it and it is very probable not compatible with 10.10

Wow you guys are awesome (help is much appreciated especially since I have thesis reviews this week)!

I removed Spigot, Deleted everything from login, Uninstalled growl, backed up my Mac Partition

***the unknown software deals with a lot of my design and architecture work (third party plug-ins for programs etc etc.), but I do not know if they are yosemite compatible (probably not) and I did just install Yosemite a couple of days ago, which fits in with the timeline of when the lag started.

I ran disk utility to run repair...and I guess I can't copy and paste it. There were about 50+ lines that started with "group differs" "permissions differ" "users differ" followed by "repaired...."

    Got no error though.

    Next steps?

sidenote that might help the investigation: but a year ago, my mac partition just randomly failed with no warning (while my bootcamp PC partition stayed perfectly safe and unharmed). At that point I had figured it was due to software that had screwed with the config and hard drive startup script (assumption) and not the physical drive itself because then the PC side would have also failed. So I started clean at that point (not restoring from a backup), but it seems like I might hit the same problem again this time because I just jumped onto my PC side and had absolutely no problems at all.

I suspect the software is too unique to your work to be listed, but RoaringApps keeps a compatibility list that may help.

a year ago, my mac partition just randomly failed with no warning (while my bootcamp PC partition stayed perfectly safe and unharmed). At that point I had figured it was due to software that had screwed with the config and hard drive startup script (assumption) and not the physical drive itself because then the PC side would have also failed.

There are several types of drive failure. If the electronics or power supply fail, then yes, the entire drive would be dead. But the most common type of failure is when physical blocks on the hard drive platters become unusable (usually because of contact between the read head and the surface). The drive is smart enough to know when this happens and keeps a supply of spare blocks available to substitute for the bad one, but when it runs out of spares then the drive must be replaced ASAP. This type of failure usually starts in a single partition, so the rest of the drive remains usable. The errors we saw involve your boot drive, which is the same one you had problems with before. SMART Utility should be able to tell you what's going on.
