Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

    OK, you are lucky that we still are here, this thread is already too long, but.... yes we know that you can not miss this Mac for a minute....

    "I ran disk utility to run repair...and I guess I can't copy and paste it. There were about 50+ lines that started with "group differs" "permissions differ" "users differ" followed by "repaired...."

    there is a misunderstanding: you repaired permissions, you should have done "repair disk".

    You should not use the Bootcamp partition for the moment, it might influence in 10.10, I don't know.

    After the excellent advice of Mad, I would like to propose to use DriveDx, instead of smart utility. It is much more explanatory and discovers more. Download the trial from   http://binaryfruit.com/drivedx  . That is enough for the time being. Run it and see what it says. If in doubt post the the result here.

    Well Lets just say both tests say that my disk is "failing"....bummer.

    I guess I have to take it in and get the hard drive replaced huh?

    Yes, but I didn't see a Time Machine backup in your EtreCheck. You do have a solid, recent backup don't you? If not you will need to backup all your critical user files now!

    Problem description:

    My MacBook Pro has recently been running extremely slow.  It can take 10 minutes just to type a simple sentence.  It's to the point now where I spend more time watching the spinning colors than I do actually working.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    You will find a lot of answers here when you read carefully through all pages.

    But : please start a new thread, this is much too long already, you will find more help in a new thread. You have an unusual set of software, you have incompatible (old) software, and you have a lot of leftovers of already uninstalled software.

    (as an exemption, I helped curlyfoeva, because there was a hardware failure that was already directly visible).

    Possibly the worst crap software to kill your mac: CleanMyMac. You find a lot to read here in this forum.

    You have unofficial keys generated for software, that may cause malware on your system.

    At least McAfee should be gotten rid of.... You find a lot to read here in this forum.

    You have installed software that would not run on a regular Yosemite. Etc.

    In a new thread explain some more on the issue and what you already did (if anything).
