Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Hi there, I know it says to start a new thread for this, but for some reason it isn't letting me post, and I'm getting desperate haha. So my macbook pro has been running extremely slow lately, and I don't know why. It runs so slow that everything times out a lot of the time, and the pages that I already have up and loaded on my browser crash. It happens a lot when I go to Youtube, or ask it to do more demanding tasks. Sometimes it's also so slow that it starts affecting itunes, and that starts to skip almost like a buffering issue. I've notices iTunes runs fine even when everything else is lagging, but if it's bad enough itunes will start lagging as well. Here is my information from EtreCheck. Thank you SO much for helping out, it's really appreciated!

    1. Uninstall Avast, it is crippling your mac, use the uninstaller.

    2. Download  AwareMedic from the famous security site  thesafemac.com  run it: it will remove the Spigot adware and possibly more.

    3. Uninstall Google Chrome: fast but not safe and spilling resources: if you do not want Safari, use Firefox or Opera, both fast and safe.

    4. Update Flashplayer.

    5. Restart, empty the trash.

your mac should do better now.

    5. Describe your backup structure.

    6. If you post a new etrecheck list after this, I will check if everything is ok. If you are not completely satisfied, describe what is not according to your expectations.

Wow thank you SO much! I did everything you said to do, and it's running like it used to! The first thing I did was uninstall avast, and that seemed to be the biggest help. Here is another run of EtreCheck! Thank you again for helping not only myself, but everyone else that you've taken the time to help as well

The only thing you still have to do is running AdwareMedic from  thesafemac.com  site.

The Spigot crap (searchme extension in Safari) is still there.

    Rest is OK, happy computing,

The advice of MadMacs is solving all issues. Do this first.

There are a few beauty marks:

    1. Flashplayer must be updated, Yosemite must be updated, when the next Yosemite update is available install it immediately.

    2. In MacintoshHD->Library->InternetPlug-ins  delete the two AdobePDFViewer plugins.

    3. In MacintoshHD->Library->LaunchDaemons  delete the  AdobeSwitchboard entry.

    4. Remove all entries in the LoginItems, this is explained in most threads here. Necessary to avoid memory pressure (you have only 4GB).

    Then Restart. Empty the Trash.
