Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

I'm reasonably sure it's the process that downloads and installs purchases from the App Store. There should be a progress bar somewhere indicating that it's sat work, either in the App Store app, LaunchPad or the LaunchPad dock icon.

Open CleanMyMac2 and use it to uninstall itself and you should see an immediate improvement.

Uninstall whatever software is responsible for what you have in /Library/StartupItems/.

It is also important what you did with CleanMyMac: when you "cleaned" som "unimportant" system files, like binaries and a lot of languages, the damage is enorm, and in the worst case you have to start all over: format your disk, reinstall freshly downloaded apps and bring back all your user data by hand.

MadMacs0 knows how to help you there.

I am a bit in time squeeze and a very unpredictable calendar.

I was hoping you or somebody else would recognize where they came from so you could consult the developer on how to remove all the files associated with them.

I found a discussion here on the first two - Startup Items Hwnetmgr, HWportdetect etc. and see the Lex even participated. Something to do with mobile phones. Unless I know exactly what you downloaded and installed for what phone I have no idea what other software was installed. I think StartOuc may be related Huawei as well. Maybe a modem?

In any case, I already told you where to look for those three files. /Library/StartupItems/ is the "StartupItems" folder in the Library folder at the root level of your hard drive (not in System or your home folder).

    Hi Mad,

I am travelling back again on monday. Short info:

HW... is Huawei: crap software for modems (rare) and mobiles.

Removing all you see in the etrecheck list is enough, restart after that.

But what damage has been done by CMM is important to know also.

An yes StartOuc is part of the HW software. Forgot it in my earlier "speed" post.

    see you,
