Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

There are some basic easy issues:

    1. the adware: Adwaremedic.app, see the post of Madamcs

    2. In SystemPreferences->User&Groups->LoginItems:  remove all entries, with the minus sign underneath.

    3. Empty the trash bin, and make some more space free on your startup disk.

    Restart.

Most fio te slowness should be gone.

There are softwares that you better uninstall:

    a. Valvesoftware Steamclean. And Uninstall the Torrent app.

    b. In Finder go to

        -  Nu te bãga->Library->LaunchAgents  and delete the adobe plist.

       -   then go to    Nu te bãga->Library->LaunchDaemons   and delete the adobe.Switchboard plist.(Note:  Let the adobe.fpsaud plist alone, this is for adobe flashplayer).

      - then in   Nu te bãga->Library->Library->InternetPlug-ins  and delete the two  adobePDFViewer  plugins.

        - then in Finder click the GO menu while holding the Alt(option) key, choose Library, and in there LaunchAgents: in there delete the two ...adobe.ARM..   plists.

    c. Formulate a good backup strategy.

    Restart.

    Hi Lex,

I´m having same issue. I change my macbook pro few days ago for new one. I used Migration path with a Time Machine´s backup but performance of new MacBook is not expected a lot of reboots and crashes. I saw that you have good answers, if you can help me, I appreciate it.

    I´m having same issue.

No, it's not even close to the same. You have major issues with your installation and your migration efforts have failed in many cases. You have a lot of third party software that is either incompatible with Yosemite, not needed or improperly installed.

Several components of your OS are crashing and giving you Kernel Panics.

Hello! Could you please help me too? My computer started running really slow like 4 days ago. I ran the disk repair utility and I think it's doing a little bit better but still unusually slow...

Thanks for the quick response! I initially downloaded CheanMyMac to help with this problem., it didn't. It's uninstalled.

I opened File Vault in SystemPreferences and it has been "Estimating Time Remaining" for about 9 hours... Is this normal? How long is it going to take? Is there a way to stop the encryption and simply turn off File Vault?

Here's the link to my thread: My Macbook suddenly running slow - TimeVault??

    1. Add Ram, minimum to 4GB better to 8GB.

    2. remove both Safari extensions.

    3. remove all entries in the LoginItems.

    4. uninstall the Samsung devguru driver software.

    5. uninstall all HP software.

    6. download AdwareMedic from  thesafemac.com  and run it to remove the adware infections.

    restart.

    enjoy.

ps: read through the posts in this thread to see how to do this all.
