Q: My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    @mejotraju,

for 5 and 6 you probably looked in the Homefolder Library, you should go to the main Library:

click yourdisk (Macintosh HD) then you see a number of folders like System, Users, Skins... There also is a folder "Library", click that one open and you will find a folder "LaunchDaemons" and a folder "InternetPlug-ins" , these folders are not empty.

    success,

    Lex

you have enough Ram, and enough free space on the disk.

I suspect a software that is not 10.9 compatible or is crapware.

    1. uninstall all Huawei software: that is both (StartOuc,HWNetMgr,HWPortDetect)

    2. If you do not use a Wacom tablet, uninstall Bamboo.

    3. I am not sure about WEject (facebook tracker?), what is it, can you miss it?

    4. Delete the  SpeedDownload Browser Plugin   you find it in  MacintoshHD / Library/ InternetPlug-ins/ folder.

    5. SketchUp: as far as I can find it is not mavericks compatible....

    6. Not relevant but superfluous: the two Adobe PDFViewer plugins, delete them (same folder as 4).

    YES, well done.

You only still have to delete the CleanMyMac entry:

Go to your Home folder, click the Library folder, click the LaunchAgents folder and delete the   com.macpaw.CleanMyMac   entry !!

    Have fun,

    mfdsimon:

    1. you have only 2GB of Ram, which is used completely and the OS has to buffer a lot on the harddisk. It might be a good idea to replace the Ram with 2x2GB or even 2x4GB, this is cheap and very easy to do with the 2008 MB. Buy only the exact spec and a good quality brand form a quality supplier. I propose OWC or Crucial.

    2. There are afew softwares that you may uninstall and a few leftovers that can go anyway.

Do not have two browsers running at the same time: that requires a lot of ram, if Firefox is still in the applications folder, make a choice between Safari and Firefox and make that choice your standard browser. If Firefox is not in your applications folder:  in Finder go to yourdisk (Macintosh HD) click Library, in there click InternetPlug-ins and in there delete  CouponPrinter-FireFox  .

    3. Check if there is a Java app in Applications/Utilities: if not delete   JavaAppletPlugin  in the MacintoshHD/Library/InternetPlug-ins folder.

    4. Go to SystemPreferences then Users&Accounts then the LoginItems tab:

remove one of the two Spotify entries with the mins sign underneath.

Then of the rest decide which apps do not have to run continuously and remove those entries too, for example Monitor, Garmin

Then restart and empty the trashbin.

    Let's see what it does.

    looks good enough.

Enough Ram, lots of free space on disk.

Q1. I suppose you have no Epson equipment anymore?

Q2. Do you use TeelstreamAudio, or is that a "leftover" ?

Q3. Why the Sierra Wireless Switch Tool ?

    Q4. Citrix still needed?

It is not heartbreaking, but if you don't need or use some, uninstall it.

I advise to have  a good backup policy!

    Hallo Erika,

    does not look too bad.

Maybe you can download the latest version of Etrecheck and run it. This one is not very complete.

But on basis of this list: not much to do: some notes:

    a. 2GB Ram is not much, so don't use it for memory-hungry applications.

    b. I would take uTorrent out of the    System/Preferences/Users&Accounts/LoginItems tab  : selct it then remove with the little minus sign underneath. Then you have to start it manually and then Quit (from the menu) so that it does not run continuously. When you do not use this (anymore), uninstall it; although I think it is not installed anymore already.

    c.  In Finder go to  MacintoshHD  /Library/InternetPlugins   and delete JavaAppletPlugin , Java is not installed and thus this can go.

    d. In case you are going to see a lot of "Page-Outs": uninstall Chrome and use only Safari.

    Lex,

I used the Etrecheck version 1.9.6. Is that the correct version?

Okay, so I removed both user login items, removed Chrome, upodated Java (but kept JavaAppletPlugin), and restarted the computer.  It is still running slowly.  Any other suggestions? I would really appreciate any advice you might have to offer.

    Some things you should consider:

    1. When the computer restarts, the apple loading screen displays for a while--anywhere from 12 to 45 minutes, I think. The user profile screen and login screens will take forever to load too.

    2. Sometimes, the computer will run slowly and then it will suddenly run regularly.  It does this a lot, but it runs mostly slow.

    3. I attempted to repair the disk, and it kept saying that the disk could not be repaired. I even restarted the computer and accessed the disk utility window from the loading screen by holding down Command+R.

    4. Is it possible that Microsoft Office is the cause?  I did not buy it from the Microsoft Office webpage, so is it possible that it's faulty?

Here is my new Etrecheck results.  Thank you in advance!

Make a backup of your disk or at least of your important user files immediately now, before anything else.

Yes, 1.9.6 is the latest. (?) It does not show the disk information, and some other information (?).

    1. In Finder CTL+click the Disk, and then GetInfo, then give me the "capacity" and "available" sizes .

It may be too full, or it is possible that your disk is dying.

    2. It also did not display the User Applets in SystemPreferences:

can you give me the non standard applets in  the SystemPreferences? Like Java and so on.

    3. What version is MS Office, 2008 or later should run correctly, 2004 is not compatible.

    Waiting for your answer.

Sorry for the late response, it takes the computer forever to do anything.

How do I back up my files without time machine? Time machine does not work on my computer for some reason. Something that has to do with AirPort not being able to connect or something. I tried to get into iCloud as well and it came up with a "Could not load iCloud preference pane" message.  I dont know of any other ways to back up my cmputer.
