Can not view Trash contents

I had trouble deleting a locked file and ran something in the terminal to empty it.

Only thing is I think I may have done something wrong, as the trash emptied but now I can't view it.

I can still put things in trash and empty it but I can't open it anymore to check what is in there.

Whatever I have done seems to have affected my finder also because afer I empty the trash the finder windows seem to freeze until I force quit.

I am using OS X 10.8.5.

I have looked on the forum and found some suggestions but they haven't worked for me. I have already tried rm -rf ~/.Trash and ls -ld ~ ~/.Trash

If I use the ls command in the terminal Trash is there, so it's not missing, just not happy!

If anyone has any other ideas that would be good. Otherwise I guess I may have to reinstall the OS.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)
