Q: Why cannot I mirror onto my normal HD TV? I have bought the cable's but my macbook is not detecting it?

I have a macbook pro from 2010 and just updated all its software. I got Lion OS X version 10.8.5 aswell. I bought the HDMI cable including the adapter but the macbook does not detect the TV at all in the "mirror" option ? Is it true that I really need a Apple TV just to mirror my display on my HD TV? There has to be some solution to this problem..Please help !!
