iMac hardrive is full

I have an imac 10.5.8. It seems that my hardrive is full and I am unable to do anything. I have deleted alot of files but to no avail. I do have a portable hard drive which has all of my photos backed up. Should I delete all of my iphotos from the mac? Will this help?
