iphone disabled connect to itunes

Force the phone into recovery mode, as described here, and restore it:

This will remove the passcode.

This support article doesn't appear to be effective any longer.

My phone is locked/disabled.

When I select "Restore" in step 4, iTunes recognizes that the software needs updated and the update runs "with" the restore (can't be avoided). As soon as the update is downloaded, iTunes recognizes the phone is locked, and says to enter the passcode on the device to connect to iTunes - which of course is impossible to do as the phone is locked/disabled.
