Test more than one camera app in more than one user acccount.

(Over time, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)

You've not tried "...contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service." 

Apple Technicians have access to all the necessary special tools, test equipment, technical data, and replacement parts required to find and correct any problem of whatever underlying cause as quickly and efficiently as humanly possible.

Be sure to backup your Mac's disk(s) before delivering it for service.

If you have an external drive, you can plug it in to your computer and copy the files from it that you want to keep.  Or you can plug into it and run Time Capsule which will also back it up for you.

Using Finder to copy visible files ONLY will not make a complete backup of your Mac.

If you have really important stuff on your Mac,

you may want to consider options beyond Time Machine/Capsule.

You could just close the "VDCAssistant" with your Activity Monitor and try again.
