Randomly Turns Off

My Macbook just randomly turns off sometimes without me doing anything. Then I'll try and boot it back up and it takes me pressing the button about 3 times for it to finally actually boot up. I have it connected to my power supply the whole time, so I'm positive that it's not a power issue. Any advice?

It's not always like I said.

I went to sleep, and when I woke up I opened the machine (battery was like 9%) and it shutted down anyways.

So I think maybe my problem is to have it sleeping for long time (few hours).. it's like if you sleep it for short times, it don't dies..

Maybe it's something of apple so we use it all the time and so we don't have it closed for hours! (Just kidding :P)

I've been having the random shutoff problem and brought it in to the campus computer repair shop (they have a certified Mac repair person on site). Of course, he couldn't reproduce the problem, but I was able to convince him that there was in fact a problem (offered to have him keep the laptop a couple days to test it out, went into details about exactly what happened when it shut off, etc.) He sent it into Apple yesterday and today I got an update that "your MacBook is currently waiting on a part at their repair facility". No clue what the part is, but hopefully Apple is figuring out what the root cause of the problem is. At least they're taking some action & not just sending the machine right back to me.

More updates when I get my laptop back...

MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2G ram

Did anybody realize that there is no more 10.4.7 MAC OS X upgrade for Intel Macs?
Seems to be part of the problem!
Otherwise, all what's said here is correct. MacBook shuts randomly off. Is hard to get back, the only thing what helps me is to press the power button for at least 7!!! seconds then it will start up again, with weired sound, but it starts again. For how long? Between seconds and hours. No pattern to recognize.

Searching for a way to solve the vertical rainbow lines, I tried the following :
- Launch the Terminal
- Type in 'nvram -p'

The result was a single line about the sound volume...
I rebooted with the Tiger Install DVD, clicked on utility and choosed the Startup Disk.
Another reboot...

Launched the Terminal again, typed in the nvram -p ... and now I have a bunch of lines...

I don't know if the Macbook is playing tricks on me... but I've made this operation this morning 7 AM... It's now 11 PM... I've used the MacBook all day... no shutdowns ...yet.

I'm still with 10.4.6 ... and am really not tempted to install 10.4.7...

Hope this helps you folks.

I'll post a message if the shutdowns come back.

I have been having the same problem and I called Applecare Yesterday and I was asked to try the PMU reset procedure and some more tests...nothing worked and at that time, it got worse and I had random shut down more than 10 times yesterday.
I brought it to Genius Bar today and gave my case number and also I told him that there are many people having the same problem (according to this board) and some people have their computer replaced. The guy at Genius Bar said he has never heard of this problem... and he turn my computer on and shut it down within 2 min...and said that I have to send it back...
I asked if I can get it replaced at Genius Bar but answer was NO.
So, now I'm waiting a box so I can send it back to fixed...( hopefully...)

But, right now, my computer is working fine.
I turn it on with AC pluged in last night around 9pm. I closed computer and it went sleep till this morning. Around 10am, I opened it and it was just fine. I turn it off around noon and brought it to Genious Bar and came back, turn it on around 3:30pm and till now, 6:45pm, no shut down...

I wish I don't need to send it back since I really need my computer with me, plus if Apple hasn't figured out what is causing this problem for sure, there will be a chance that my computer wouldn't be fixed totally.....what is the best for me to do...??

Im int he same boat as many other. Honestly anyone you talk to at apple will say they dont know of this problem. even though its the highest posted topic on this forum. But here the catch, they may fix this via an update. Alot of people say they cant, but they fixed the moo on the macbook pro. I had a ibook with the same probs as the macbook. random shut down. and an update did 100% fix the problem. Mine is at apple right now getting worked on. Honestly I would send your off too. If not its going to eat you up inside and make you mad. Also taking it to the store is worthless unless its under 14days. I tried 3 times. Apple has sweet products, im sure this will all be fixed real soon.

Took my Macbook to the Genius bar. While waiting to be called, I powered up the MB (after it sat all night and day plug in while off) and after connecting to the Apple Store network and going to Safari, the computer shut off. They had to send it in for repair - I mentioned the thread and that the logic board seems to be the cause. Should have back w/in about a week.

Mine has done this a THREE times.

The first two times, I was updating to 11.2.5 or whatever for Microsoft Office Student edition, and at the almost exact same point on the loading bar, it shuts down.

After the second shutdown while upgrading, I turned it on, my Mac started loading Mac OS X, and shut down again!! Help please! First mac. 😟

MacBook 2.0 GHz Black Stock Mac OS X (10.4.7)

FYI 20 week black macbook with ramjet 2G ram upgrade.
It started having random shutoffs mostly during startups.

Even when I boot with the T option for firewire drive only
it would crash after just a few minutes.

Could not get through the boot process to get the system up.

After it shut off, I pressed and held the power button for
30 seconds or so, The light on the front went to a fast blink
then on.

It booted fine after that (at least it has been up for 10 minutes or so.

I will talk to the IT guys Thursday.

My broken Macbook is scheduled to be picked up and sent back by a courier service tomorrow.. Ive already received a order confirmation for a brand new one from the factory so its all good..

Been using my (dead) macbook for a day or 2 waiting for it to be picked up.. The random shutdowns occur a lot less now all of a sudden, but I did get the colored lines thing this morning.. Good thing its going back

Would it be wise to NOT install the 10.4.7 update on my new macbook until there is more news on these issues?
