Randomly Turns Off

My Macbook just randomly turns off sometimes without me doing anything. Then I'll try and boot it back up and it takes me pressing the button about 3 times for it to finally actually boot up. I have it connected to my power supply the whole time, so I'm positive that it's not a power issue. Any advice?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Sorry, i don't have the Mac handy (being fixed) but I bet the serial numbers are similar. Usually these bad logic boards come in batches.

I would reccommend that you go talk to the Geniuses again (maybe try and get a different one so that the first doesn't feel stupid and decides not to listen to you) and point them to this thread. Tell them about how they can take it and leave it ideling in the back if they like and it is just a matter of time befor it shuts down randomly right?

Good luck though, because this isn't officially aknowledged by Apple yet, so even the Geniuses are sometimes unaware. However, my guy said he has already dealt with a few of these bad logic boards in the new macs, so it should just be a matter of time before Apple aknowledges the problem officially.

I just got off the phone with Apple support and the guy I talked to said all the problems I'm having seem to be logic board-related problems, and advised that I ship it in to get it replaced. So although Apple may not be admitting it on a wide scale, at least this guy knew what he is talking about and I am pretty sure I am going to get this logic board replaced if the problem persists.

Hey, add me to the list of people who had a MacBook randomly shutting down. I had a BlackBook (SN: 4H620...) ordered the day they came out. Just this week it started exhibiting this problem. Boy, am I glad I came to this site first!

I went straight into the AppleStore and told them what's going on. They gave me a brand new 'Book (SN: 4H625...) and just swapped the hard drives. This one seems to be fine (in the three minutes I've had it on thus far).

Kudos to Apple for taking care of this problem the right way. (At least for me.) I was very impressed by Apple today.

This started happening to me too. Bought my MacBook in the last week of May. Base model with 1GB upgrade. Had one or two mysterious shutoffs about halfway through June, but then they started happening a few times a day.

After a few suggestions from Apple Care, I tried the Apple Hardware Test. The machine would very reliably shut off during the Memory Test part, but only if I had the extended test box checked. So I figured it was the memory, and the guy at the Apple store agreed. He replaced it, and the hardware test passed in the store, twice. I got home, and after using it less than an hour, it shut off twice.

Back to the Apple store, a different tech guy, is reluctant to just replace the thing without having witnessed the problem. I can understand that. But he goes in the back, and I guess talks to a manger or Apple or something, and comes out ready to replace the machine. New MacBook on the table next to my old one, firewire cable between them, and the old one booted up in target disk mode. Four attempts at data migration failed; it would power off. Which means it's definitely not a software issue. On a whim, the guy tried once more with the old one running on battery, and the data migration succeeded.

I've had the replacement for five days. So far no issues, and this one doesn't moo (unlike the last one). Looks like the only fix for this issue is to replace the logic board, or a full machine replacement.

Hi! I'm having this problem too, I've a week 22 machine and it happens to me too.

I don't have virtuadesktops installed, and the machine shut downs even in the boot screen, so I think if it's a software-related problem must be something in the firmware..

I noticed this happens when you wake up the machine. After a while it works fine for me.. and it happens (for me) only when using it with batteries. May be a problem of batteries getting overcharged or something?

I'm so far of a apple center (I live in Montevideo, Uruguay), so I hope it can be fixed with a software upgrade!

Another question: Those who had their logic board changed.. do you still experience problems or they were solved?

Thanks,
Luar

Yes, they replaced it right there. The guy I talked to suggested he'd seen some of these come in before, and he wasn't interested in fixing it. He wanted to get me squared away.

I'd try going back and pleasantly explaining that you need to walk out of the store with a functional MacBook. It may not work for you, but you'll get a lot farther without being argumentative. Firm, yes. Argumentative, no.

Talked with an applecare agent today about the issues of hum moo noise and random shutting down. The agent was nice and did a great job of not responding to my question "are these serious problems with macbooks?" The guy admitted nothing. He had me reset the pram and power supply, gave me a case number and told me to call back if the problem happens again. Two years ago I had an iBook that had a recall due to a logic board poblem. After amost a year and returning my iBook four times for repair and raising holly **** with Apples customer service they finally sent me a new iBook. My fear is that the problems I'm having with the Macbook smell like the problems I had with my iBook. My experience with Apple service is a nighmare.
