Contacts disappeared from iPhone 4

I've been trying to set up iCloud on my iPhone 4, and thought I'd set it up to back up my contacts. However, yesterday I discovered that all of the contacts on my phone have disappeared. I have no idea how this happened, and dont know how to check to see if they backed up. Please help! I'm currently travelling overseas and need my contacts when I return home.
