Q: DVD Player freezes at a black screen, will not play DVDs.

I just updated my MacBook Pro. Running OSX 10.8.5. Now, my DVD Player will not function. As soon as I open it, it goes to a black screen and freezes. I downloaded another DVD player trial version and it works well, so it is not the DVD drive. Is there anythig I can do to fix it quickly? So frustrating!

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

If it's a mid-2010 15" model...

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

You may have the problem mentioned there.
Take it to an Apple store, show them the panic log & the article above - they should run a simple pass/fail test.

Also see TS4088 ....3 year limit: Apple Support Communities
since even if it fails the test, you may need to persevere.
