Cannot get my 30G classic to sync to my windows laptop. Suggestions?

Bought a used 30g IPOD classic on e-bay (I know, what could go wrong?). Attempts to edit the 5000+ songs left me with the 40 songs I wanted and over 5000 "footprints" or titles of songs where there's no music. You go to play the thing and it has to thumb thru hundreds of blanks to get to the actual music. Also it won't sync with the computer (using windows). The sync function shows up in grey so you can't do it. The manual offers no help. Any suggestions?

The best way to resolve this issue would be to restore the device to factory settings and sync your iTunes music library to your device. Below, I have included the articles that walk you through the process.
