Q: Document can't be opened in pages

Created a doc in pages on  my ipad.  Now it says "document can't be opened".  Will let me copy but not email or save to itunes.  It is in the icloud but tells me I need a newer version of pages for icloud.  Won't let me open on my mac either.  Can anyone help - need this file!  Have checked on other forums and some people say to open in an older version - how can I download an older version of pages either on Ipad or mac.  Have already tried deleting pages app and reinstalling.

Nope. That's not it either. Sorry. Thanks for trying, though.

I've already rewritten the document that won't open, so my problem isn't as critical as it once was. But I have no trust in iCloud whatsoever now, so I won't use it for documents whithout tripple backups or something...

    hey turls,

I had the same prob. and am not able to fix it. But if you open your iCloud, you should be able to access it + work on it + print it from there.

    Hope this helps!!

Similar problem. And seemingly VERY stuck...

Running Pages on Mac Mavericks (and previously was using Pages at iCloud.com - but presently unable to also).

Pages on Mac says 'file xxx couldn't be opened'...with every file of mine, which previously had all been saved on iCloud (via the Mac save window  i.e. not with pages on iOS device).

iCloud presently is telling me to upgrade to iCloud drive - but that won't be available to my Mavericks Mac (and Yosemite is not released).

It seemed I was doomed - and didn't want to upgrade to iCloud drive in case I lost everything that at least appears in the File Open window...but I also discovered that I could mail or message these files that were shown...which I tried and it produced a new mail with the document - which then OPENED in Pages!? Yay...?

    Hope this helps.

changing my reply.... I thought I'd found a fix, but I'm still unable to open my pages documents with the latest version that I only just created with the previous version (of pages).

Same problem here. Only for documents I put in my iCloud drive. Apple needs to get their dung together and start making software that works again! Used to be able to rely on their products, nowadays it's more like windows in the old days -_-

There are many Office suites, some are free, some are not, all are better than Pages.

The question is how long will you suffer?

it is outdate thread but comes up first in the search so I decided to share what helped me:

    1. Go to icloud.com from non-osx/ios device and find your doc in Pages, Numbers section. Mine were fine and I was able to open them from there. I did small edit like added a space and quit. Then the doc was opened on Mac.

    2. Workaround (osx only) to get pdf version of you doc - find file in Finder. File->Quick look->Open with Preview -> Export as PDF.

I too could not open a file I was working on so I right clicked (two finger tap on laptop) over the document. I hit "get info" and a bar should up. At the bottom was a shrunken version of my document just barely readable. Then under window on the bar at the top I hit zoom. I could then read it. I did have to retype my document but at least it wasn't lost for ever.
