You have to upgrade first to SnowLeopard (paid CD), then update SL to 10.6.8, and then you can (internet Appstore) upgrade to MountainLion (paid, with apple ID) directly.

BTW: only the first Macbookair can not upgrade to MountainLion, the max is Lion 10.7.5 on that one. All other Macbookairs can upgrade to MountainLion.
