Q: Problems with iBook G3 on 802.11ac base station

I unearthed my old iBook G3 (800Mhz, 604MB ram, updated to 10.4.11) and it still hums along, but I'm having problems connecting it to my new 802.11ac Airport Extreme.

I know the card in it (original Airport) only supports WPA, but even if I take my security down to that, it still won't connect. So I created a guest network with no encryption and I still can't connect. It always gives me the same error on each type..."There was an error joining the Airport network "mynetworkname".

What am I missing? There is no option on the newer APE to enable mixed mode (A/B/G/N) but I thought for sure it could connect to a network with no security on it. Any advice? I feel like I'm being dumb about something obvious, so hopefully someone can gently point it out to me.
