clipboard is not working on OS X mountain lion

We upgraded the MacBook Air to OS X Mountain Lion and want to be able to clip portions of a screen to the clipboard. We use the Command 4 and draw the area to be clipped, but when we try to paste it into a Word document, for example, nothing happens. I can't even find the clipboard to see if it is there.
