My mouse won't click?

My trackpad is working fine, in that I can move the mouse but when I click it nothing happens. I tried using a mouse and the right click works but the left click still doesn't work. I've restarted the computer many times but there also seems to be something weird going on with the computer itself because when I first start up the computer it only lets my mouse stay in the toolbar. It's only after I put the computer to sleep that I'm free to move the mouse where I want.

Any ideas? The computer is about four years old now. I've seen questions similar to this and they suggested resetting the PRAM and NVRAM, which I tried, but nothing changed.

Hey kaylster,

First, I would try to isolate the issue. You can use a different user account:

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem doesn't occur on the other user account that may mean it is a third party plugin or startup item causing the issue. If that doesn't isolate the problem, then try safe mode:

Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode

If the issue still occurs here, then I would first make sure to backup your computer, and then reinstall OS X.

Best,
