MacBook Pro Keeps Freezing, Restarting to Blue Screen

I have a Mac Book Pro - it's 10.6.8. It's probably about 1.5 to 2 years old. My problem is two-fold - first of all, it keeps freezing. This happens when I'm on the internet...chrome became unusable, so i went to firefox, which eventually became unusable, so i moved onto safari...and now i'm starting to get problems again. It will freeze and I will have to manually shut it off.

The second problem I have is on re-start...I will get the chime and the grey screen with the apple. it will then go one to a blue screen and sit there (it won't continue starting up to my desktop). I will then have to manually shut it down and re-start it...it will then typically do the same thing (end up sitting on the blue screen). After I turn it off and on anywhere from about 3 to 7 times it will eventually go to the desktop and become usable.

i've noticed recently that now, rather than going and freezing on the blue screen at restart, it will go to a grey screen (after i see the grey one with the apple) and just sit there.

Anyone know what could be going on, what to do, etc.

I need to take it into an apple store and let then have a look, i think. my problem is i'm in the middle of a big project and really can't go without my laptop for the next couple of weeks...so am wondering if there are any "self help" suggestions people might have.

Try restting PRAM

Try booting into safe mode (disables 3rd party extenstions)

(Hold shift on power up until loading bar appears under Apple logo and wait)

Let me know how those work.

Re-setting PRAM helped a bit. Although now the problem I'm having is that it will freeze if I try operating multiple tabs on Safari (all the other browsers are totally inoperable - chrome, firefox, and opera will all freeze the system if i even try to open them).

I should add..I know it's not a space issue because I have a ton of space on my computer - I don't even have any songs on it or anything.

I don't know why your other reply isn't showing up in this thread (because I got an email notification of it)...but to answer your question, no i didn't start it in safe mode - if i do that, what am i supposed to do when it's started up?

Yeah It does that on occasion, I can't see yours until after I reply to it. Dumb.

Anyhow. What safe mode does is only boot what is needed. It removes all the excess extensions. This will allow us to see if it is a 3rd party extension, or something running that is causing your unit to freeze.

Try booting into safe mode (disables 3rd party extenstions)

(Hold shift on power up until loading bar appears under Apple logo and wait)

Once the login screen comes up (if you have multiple logins) login and proceed as normal. Use Safari and do what you have normally been doing that has caused the unit to crash/freeze and see if it occurs.

okay, i started it in safe mode and it doesn't seem to be having the same problem. now, sometimes it will be okay for a while then act up...but i should say that right before i started it in safe mode, i'd had to turn it off because it froze because of the tab problem - so as it stands i can open multiple tabs, search from them, flip back and forth quickly without a problem (in safe mode).

also..a bit more info about the 'evolution' of this problem - it started first in chrome about a month ago. chrome would be okay unless i tried to click on an 'expandable' picture - the type you get on facebook, tumblr, or google images - where the picture would pop up and expand. that problem went away in safari (i can click on those types of pictures no problem)...however, i'm now having the 'freezing' problem with tabs...and safari is the only browser that will open/is operable at all.

edit - something else i just noticed. in safe mode, when i open a safari tab, it has a bunch of sites under the 'top sites' button...however, in 'hormal mode' there are no sites...just black boxes.

First off let me day that chrome and apple do not play well together. I use chrome because I have Google phone and like my stuff to sync across all my devices but on my Pro chrome crashes at least once a week and on my iPad at least once a day.

Seeing as how it seems to work in safe mode I believe your issue is software.

What I would do is uninstall every browser except for safari. I mean delete everything to do with those browsers including deleting their folders in application support. After removing everything reboot (normally) and run safari and see if you experience issues. If you don't you can add one browser at a time and test to ensure everything still works. If it doesn't work then it is obviously something wrist causing the issue and we will have to investigate further.

Unfortunately, I got the problem again. Safari is fine if I only use one tab. The problems come when I open another tab. When I open another tab, I'm usually okay if i type an address into the bar...but what it really doesn't like is when i try to do a search in the search window.

The other problem I'm having is on start up...when it advances to the blue screen and then just stops loading. I will usually have to turn off then restart my computer several times before it finally starts up to my desktop.

Ok so here is what we are looking at.

It works fine in safe mode which suggests that it is some 3rd party extension that is either eating up RAM or processing power. We knocked off Chrome, Firefox, etc and it still does it.

My next thought would be to check safari extensions and add ons. Remove them all. Also make sure everything is updated on your MacBook. Did you install or update anythign right before this issue started happening?

If it does crash again, make a note of the exact time, reboot and try going to Apps > Utilites > Console and look at the System Logs and see what was trying to run at that exact time it crashed. Or if you can even, while its frozen open up activity monitor and see what processes are trying to run.

What you suggested worked at first - in fact I had no problems at all and everything was back to normal (i could use safari fine). But then I decided to try shutting it down and starting it up again to see if it started okay...and it was the same problem as before...it would start and go to a blue screen and then just sit there (this time, i had the unwelcome development that a bunch of horizontal black lines appeared across the blue screen). when i finally got it to start up to my desktop (which took about 4 attempts) and went back on to safari, the same problem had re-appeared...that when i opened multiple tabs and tried to go to the search box it immediately froze.

when i was finally able to restart properly, i tried to screen cap the part of the system log that was most recent (i think you can also see what would have been my multiple attempts to start up)

Unfortunately my attempt to upload the screencaps didn't work. in fact, when i opened a new tab it cause the picture on my screen to slide to the left (such that the left side of the image was cut off but reappeared on the right side of the screen) and there were horizontal lines down the screen. Ironically, when i restarted my laptop it started up normally without stopping on the blue screen like usual!

I have managed to copy and most the most recent info from my console about what happened (i tried to keep it minimal, as i know pasting 50 pages of code is unwelcome). btw, i really appreciate all your assistance 🙂

So it happened again this morning - i took my computer off sleep, was able to use the internet for a couple of minutes and then it froze. here is the entire log from the consol since i opened it after 'sleep' - it only workef ro a couple of minutes before freezing - it froze about 9:01 or 9:02:

Back up everything. Then:

One last thing we could try is to check your HD. Boot to your OS disc or recovery partition and open disk utility. Click on the HD and Verify/Repair your HD. You can also try permissions as well to see if that cleans it up. This is a shot in the dark but you never know.

If that doesn't work then I would say you need to reinstall your OS and start clean. From what I can tell in the console logs your files are out of whack. If repairing the HD doesn't fix it then the only way to fix it is a clean install.

okay i will do that. however, before i do i will ask the inevitable question (given the luck i've been having) - what happens if i can't find any of those discs - which i can't seem to? can i just go into apple and buy more?
